77 Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Project update: January 23, 2024

Project Overview

The City of Miami Beach commenced a significant rehabilitation project for the 77 Street Bridge, aimed at ensuring its safety, reliability, and longevity. The project involves comprehensive enhancements to various parts of the bridge including the deck, superstructure, substructure and other critical components.

This rehabilitation effort is primarily driven by the bridge's Sufficiency Rating, currently standing at 62.5, which is below the required threshold of 70. This rating necessitates urgent repairs in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration guidelines. The decision for rehabilitation was influenced by the April 2022 inspection report, which revealed significant deterioration, such as corroded steel and missing concrete. Initially starting on the north side, the project shifted to the south side to minimize disruption to nearby schools. A critical evaluation period is currently underway this week to assess the impact of the south side closure on traffic and school operations, to determine if structural work can proceed without causing significant disruption.

What's Happening

The rehabilitation work, which began in mid-January 2024, initially started with the closure of the westbound lane. However, concerns about traffic flow, particularly regarding the operations of adjacent schools, led to a re-evaluation of traffic conditions following community feedback. Consequently, all construction activities were temporarily suspended.

The current focus is on assessing the impact of closing the eastbound lane, which began this week. During this time, no structural work is being preformed.

The City plans to approach the project in phases. Work will cease temporarily until the end of the school year in June before shifting focus to the other side of the bridge. However, if the evaluation reveals that the current traffic arrangements are still causing significant disruptions, the City is prepared to suspend all work until June.

What to Expect

  • The Public Works Department has modified the lane closure to evaluate its effects on traffic.
  • Only Westbound traffic allowed on 77 Street between Hawthorne Ave & Tatum Waterway Dr
  • Motorists are advised to heed posted signage and use the detour at 85 Street.
  • Police may be present during working hours.
  • Seven parking spots on Bayside Lane, south of 77 Street, will be temporarily unavailable.
  • Sidewalk detours will be in place during construction. Pedestrians should follow the posted signage.
  • Moderate levels of construction noise are expected during daytime hours.
  • The site will have construction materials, machinery, vehicles, and personnel present.
