Borescope inspections reveal 7EA users' ongoing battle against clashing, IGV rubs, shim migration

If one were reconstructing the E F Hutton financial services ad for the gas-turbine generation sector of the electric power industry, it might go something like this: "When Rod Shidler talks, everyone listens." That's why the 7EA Users Group steering committee invited Shidler, a founder of Advanced Turbine Support Inc (ATS), Gainesville, Fla, the well-respected inspection and technology services firm, to open the organization's 2011 conference two weeks ago in San Antonio. more

Clashing RCA: Your help needed, NOW

The 7EA steering committee's Pat Myers, plant manager of AEP's Ceredo Generating Station, Huntington, WVa, invited gas-turbine expert Rodger Anderson to attend the opening presentation at the organization's 2011 conference-the report on gas-path borescope findings by Rod Shidler of Advanced Gas Turbine Support Inc (ATS) described in the previous article. more

Wood Group acquires GTE, presents on DLN tuning, open-architecture controls platforms

Gas Turbine Efficiency announced its acquisition by Wood Group GTS during the 7EA meeting, leaving its employees scurrying to switch their uniform shirts before the vendor fair. The ownership change meant Wood Group had back-to-back presentations on the first day of the conference-one on DLN tuning by Mike Gabriel, who prepared that presentation as a GTE employee and delivered it as a Wood Group employee, and one on the benefits of open-architecture platforms for gas-turbine (GT) control systems by Mike Moore of Wood Group GTS. more

How will you meet the requirements of CSAPR?

Perhaps a better starting question: Have you ever heard of CSAPR? Next question: What is the Cross State Air Pollution Rule and will it impact your plant's operation? PSM's Jeff Benoit helped the users answer those questions and if the second answer was "yes" he had an idea or two about how his company could help. Benoit gave attendees a quick look at what this June 2011 replacement for EPA's 2005 Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR) was all about. more

What plant personnel should know about cooling towers to maximize performance

Listen to David Brumbaugh on your computer screen while eating lunch and pick up some pointers on how to be more effective in monitoring cooling towers on rounds and how to conduct the proper offline inspections to maintain top performance. Brumbaugh, founder and president of DRB Industries, Broken Arrow, Okla, is a frequent speaker at user group meetings where he shares his knowledge on gas-turbine air inlet systems and cooling towers-much of it honed on plant visits. more

7FA Users Group announces plans for 2012 meeting
