Dear People of Ascension,

This morning as I walked through Washington Square Park with Finn, I saw a crew of people arranging benches all around the fountain. The benches were painted with vibrant murals and messages about topics like gun violence, ecology, immigration, mental health and peace-making. I learned that the artists are students in NYC Public Schools, grades 3-12. The exhibit, called Benchmarks, opens in Washington Square for just a few days and will move to other city parks from June 7-September 14.

I was enchanted- both by the creativity and the power of young New Yorkers publicly expressing the world they want to see. I’m so glad schools are encouraging both. I’m reminded that colleagues and friends are gathering every week in several different contexts to express their hopes for our country and protest policies that threaten our immigrant neighbors, our social security, our first amendment rights and more. There too, creativity, public witness and acting together all play a part. It’s part of what nourishes our hearts and our communities.

Does this have anything to do with Ascension Day, the feast we celebrated last night and will continue for the next ten days as we move towards Pentecost? This may be a stretch, but intuitively I feel a connection. The Ascension tells us of Jesus returning to the heart of God, absent from the disciples in the flesh but present in a new, mysterious and intimate way. The ascended Christ fills all things and sends the Spirit to infuse the world with the creative energy of God. The Spirit makes justice, beauty and love; she is the life-giver and the holy source of all that encourages our hearts. Could Benchmarks be an expression of that?

Joyous Ascensiontide, dear people of Ascension!

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
