Take care and stay aware: It's Baby Copperhead Season
|
|
- In late summer copperheads give birth to live young, typically six to seven babies, although it can be as many as 15.
- Young copperheads are 8 to 10 inches long and are born with both fangs and venom.
- The young have bright yellow tail tips that they wiggle to attract prey such as frogs and lizards.
Outdoor Safety Precautions:
- If you are out at night, always use a flashlight, because most snakes are active on warm nights. Shine before your step.
- Never pick up or attempt to move a snake.
- Don’t put your hands or feet in places where you can’t see.
- Wear leather gloves if you have to handle debris, logs, rocks and other objects where a snake could be hiding.
- Wear high boots, gaiters and thick pants when working or walking in grassy or wooded areas.
- Remove piles of brush and leaves well away from walkways and play areas.
To report an animal issue within the community, please contact the Sea Pines Security Department Dispatch Phone Line at 843.671.7170.
