Greetings!
March 30, 2023
Welcome Spring!
We often have customers come to the store and ask about the best organic practices they can employ for their lawn. We'd like to offer to you a few simple steps you can take that will help you in your quest.
8 things you can do any time to improve your lawn organically:
  1. Switch to an Organic Fertilizer. This is one of the easiest things you can do, especially if you're not using a lawn service.
  2. Set your Mower Height High.
  3. Let Grass Clippings Lie.
  4. Sharpen Mower Blades.
  5. Water Early in the Morning.
  6. Water Deep — NOT Often.
  7. Topdress with Compost.
  8. Remove Thatch.
You might be wondering why you should use organic methods for your lawn. Synthetic fertilizers are water soluble and a fair amount ends up in our water supply resulting in negative impacts to the environment. The synthetic fertilizers feed plants directly, resulting in a rapid improvement in the color of your lawn - but they don't last. You will find that you need to reapply repeatedly through the season. Organic lawn fertilizer feeds the soil instead, improving soil health by encouraging the growth of beneficial organisms and earthworm colonies. This improves the health of lawn grasses, leading to stronger, more disease- and pest-resistant turf. One of our resident organic-lawn gurus Dekes is giving a talk on this subject Saturday 4/1 at 11am. The event is free, but we would appreciate if you would kindly register (by clicking here).
If you can't make Deke's lawn talk this weekend, don't worry...we've got handouts at the store we can share, and lots of knowledgeable staff to help guide you. And we're putting several organic fertilizers and seeds on sale this weekend 10% off...so stop in and get started.
It's still relatively cool out but Spring is here. Nothing lifts our spirits more than the arrival of spring flowers. Click here for this week's blog and some ideas for creating spring pots or boxes.
We're getting deliveries weekly. This week we received cold weather vegetables...stop in and see our selection of lettuces, cabbage, and more!
And don't forget our educational events...this Sunday (4/2) CL Fornari is hosting a virtual event all about creating vertical elements for added style and whimsy to your gardens and containers. Click here to learn more and register.
