8 Winter Escapes to Book Now
After the Christmas market rush, many cities are relatively crow-free during the winter months. They offer cozy experiences and wonderful outdoor adventures at a lower cost than in sunny months. This year if you want to embrace the cold weather and make the most of the snowy season, we think these destinations are positively beautiful in winter.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
If you’re looking for snow-capped mountains and cozy lodges, look no further than Jackson Hole. Known for its vast ski options, any level of adventurist can hit the slopes. If you’re not into skiing, sign up for a guided snowshoe excursion through Grand Teton National Park. When you're ready to warm up, take a dog sled tour to the Granite Hot Springs, where you can indulge in their thermal pools.
Zermatt, Switzerland
A skier’s paradise, the Swiss alpine village of Zermatt lies at the foot of the highest mountains in the Alpine mountain range. The Matterhorn Glacier Ride is the highest 3S cable car in the world and can transport you up to the Klein Matterhorn for spectacular views. Take in the après-ski scene on the village's main street of Bahnhofstrasse, lined with boutique shops, hotels, and restaurants, and go ice-skating in one of the outdoor rinks.
New York City
Nothing compares to New York City during the holidays! Enjoy The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, ice skating in Central Park, and window shopping along Fifth Avenue. Don’t forget to book your seats for the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.
Budapest, Hungary
Winter is definitely the most beautiful time of year to visit Budapest. After spending a few chilly hours exploring the snow sparkled city, head into one of their grand cafés or museums to warm up. Or better yet, enjoy a thermal bath and let the chill melt away.
Whistler, Canada
Winter is taken to a whole new level in Whistler, British Columbia. Ski enthusiasts flock to this area for its world-renowned slopes. There are many activities for non-skiers too! Go bobsledding at the Whistler Sliding Centre or enjoy a backcountry snowshoe tour. At the end of the day, warm up with a hot toddy in the après-ski style village.
Rome, Italy
If you don’t mind a bit of cold weather while you make your way through iconic attractions such as the Spanish Steps, Colosseum, and Roman Forum, visiting the Eternal City during winter is a magical experience. Visit in December to enjoy Piazza Navona's extensive Christmas market and listen to the Pope celebrate Christmas Mass at St. Peter's Basilica.
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague transforms into a winter wonderland after the snow falls on this beautiful city. Take an evening cruise to enjoy breathtaking views from the Vltava River and discover the beauty of one of the most famous cities. Also don’t miss some of Europe’s best Christmas markets and enjoy a cup of mulled wine.
Iceland
The natural wonders of Iceland make it a perfect and unique place to enjoy this magical season. Check out the frozen beaches, catch a mesmerizing northern lights display, and when you feel like warming up, have a soak in the Blue Lagoon.
Christmas Markets in the USA
If you’re dreaming of visiting a European Christmas market this year but can’t quite get yourself over to Europe, there are European-style Christmas markets right here in the U.S. — no passport needed. Visit one of these festive markets and feel just like the real thing, but here at home.
