A note from 8-koi headquarters :: winter 2022
The Chinese New Year is upon us and it’s the Year of the Tiger symbolizing strength, power and prosperity in the Chinese zodiac. We set our intentions to continue to deliver on our mission to offer beginning to end services, in all four of our divisions, and uphold our commitment to offer the personal connection that keeps our clients satisfied, keeps us recommended and keeps clients coming back for more.

As a team, our strength is staying true to our core values – passion, excellence, dependability and thoughtfulness. Our power is in our influence and abilities to help and support others in meeting their goals – at work with clients and coworkers, in the community and in organizations and at home with family members and friends.

Through our strength in staying committed to our values and through our power to show care and personal connection with others, and helping them accomplish their goals, we can discover and reap the richness of prosperity – wealth, health and happiness. Together as a team we do this every day.

The tiger reminds us that if we focus on our strengths, skills and capabilities, if we invest in the power of connection, together we will create the environment and culture poised for prosperity – in our personal and business lives.

Prosperity is a way of living and thinking, and not just money or things. Poverty is a way of living and thinking, and not just a lack of money or things. - Eric Butterworth, served as a minister, author and radio personality.

Sincere thanks to each of you for your efforts, focus and commitments that have brought us to where we are today. Together, in the Year of the Tiger, I have no doubt we'll continue to use our strengths and power to do good, be well and actualize prosperity along the way.

Gratefully,
Inga

GETTING BACK TO THE 4 Ps:
People, Programs, Processes and Pipeline

The 4th quarter was another excellent showing by our People. We continue to gain traction by executing excellent “Human Touch” operations. Here are some of our 2021 highlights:

People: We continue to expand our team and have hired Cyber Security Engineers, Gerald Rainer and Suann Wlilloughby as well as Systems Engineer, Thorin Compy, as well as Electrical Engineering Graduate, Jorge Rivera, CAD Designer Jared Jacobs, Construction Site Manager, Gabriel Herrera, and FBI Telephone Operator, Kiana Kirk. The newest team members are already making a positive impact to both 8-koi and CDE. Welcome aboard!

Programs:
Construction
8-koi was awarded a design build contract to provide designs and construction of a 300 square foot (SF) facility for the Navy at Cape Canaveral Space force Station Florida.
Design Engineering
Cape Design Engineering successfully captured contracts supporting multiple federal, state and county agencies. Some projects include:

  • Perform a structural design (foundation) for the installation of a wind turbine generator on Ascension Auxiliary Airfield on the Ascension Island
  • Re-design a fuel farm for the Almond Oil Company
  • Lighting and photometric design for Flagler Palm Coast High School
  • Structural evaluation of the Eissey Theater at Palm Beach State College
  • Perform professional cost estimation and design review services for Hinge Beam Actuators at Kennedy Space Center

Healthcare
  • 8-koi was awarded a contract out of Brooklyn, NY, to provide crutches for a group of Urgent Care offices.

Technical Administration
  • 8-koi was awarded the Washington DC based FBI Telephone Operator contract.

Pipeline: We continue to leverage an extra year of 8(a) eligibility – valid until April 2023.
  • We’ve identified 18 new business development opportunities that we are evaluating for pursuit.
  • We're pursing both prime and sub-contractor opportunities and are open to opportunities, newbusiness@8-koi.com.

Process: We gained further traction by focusing on continuous improvement - our “Big Rocks.” Thanks to Matt Rebholz, 8-koi developed and implemented a Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) marking program to include training, marking, coversheets, emails, etc. Sami Mized developed and operationalized the new Suntree building IT Plan. HR (Amy Sigmon and May Rilo) ensured annual performance reviews were completed and enhanced our benefits for 2022. The HR team is hard at work trying to enhance our new employee onboarding experience.

Looking ahead, together as a team, we'll continue to build on our strengths and work through the challenges and unknowns that arise. We have the momentum we need and a strong team with the right tools that'll make our 2022 goals are reality.

As always, your questions, suggestions and thoughtful emails are welcome.

Stay healthy and be safe,
Dean

Active Listening
Contributed by: Dean Rosenquist

A 2022 goal for me is to become a better listener. I wanted to share a few thoughts on Active Listening. There are five key active listening techniques you can use to help become a more effective listener:
1. Pay Attention - Give the speaker your undivided attention and acknowledge the message. Recognize that non-verbal communication also "speaks" loudly.
  • Look at the speaker directly.
  • Put aside distracting thoughts.
  • Don't mentally prepare a rebuttal.
  • Avoid being distracted by environmental factors. For example, side conversations.
  • "Listen" to the speaker's body language.

2.     Show That You're Listening - Use your own body language and
gestures to show that you are engaged.
     •  Nod occasionally.
     •  Smile and use other facial expressions.
     • Make sure your posture is open and interested.
     •  Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like ____"yes," and "uh huh."

3.     Provide Feedback - Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect on what is being said and to ask questions.
     • Reflect on what has been said by paraphrasing. "What I'm hearing _____is... ____," and "Sounds like you are saying... ," are great ways to _____reflect back.
     • Ask questions to clarify certain points. "What do you mean when you _____say... ." "Is this what you mean?"
     • Summarize the speaker's comments periodically.

4.     Defer Judgment - Interrupting is a waste of time. It frustrates the speaker and limits full understanding of the message.
     • _Allow the speaker to finish each point before asking questions.
     • _Don't interrupt with counter arguments.

5.     Respond Appropriately - Active listening is designed to encourage respect and understanding. You are gaining information and perspective.
__ • Be candid, open and honest in your response.
__ • Assert your opinions respectfully.
__ • Treat the other person in a way that you think they would want to _____be treated.
MEET THE TEAM :: Chris Manning

Finance and Contracts Manager
Hard-working, unassuming, focused, reliable, diligent and quiet are some of the words co-workers use when they think of 'Excel Guru' Chris Manning, 8-koi's finance and contracts manager.

Inga asked Chris to join her accounting team in 2018 and his conscientious reputation precedes him.

“Chris works very hard in the background and is a valuable asset to our team. He never complains, he just works to get things done," said an anonymous source – wishing to remain unnamed for nudging Chris into the spotlight.

"He's open to new tasks, has an exceptional work ethic and is extremely skilled in finance, contracts and is willing to share his Excel expertise."

A star player at work and also at home, Chris shares that he’s been wed to his wife Vanessa for nearly 20 years - she took his photo for this article. They share two teen daughters, Grace and Rachael.

Chris is a native Floridian and graduate of Stetson University in DeLand where he earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration. He then received his Master of Business Administration at Florida Tech.

Before joining 8-koi's small office, Chris worked with tech giants Harris and DRS, and was formerly a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley.

When he’s not at work, you can find Chris working in his yard, fishing, golfing, and enjoying time spent with his family.
Reflective of his nature, this is the uncomplicated and succinct overview of our ever-steady, always at the ready, Chris Manning.
