Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

I am so proud of our middle school youth. Last week, we were volunteers at the Eastport Community Center in Annapolis. Seven of our youth and three of our youth leaders supported the STAIR-- Annapolis Summer Readers' Theater. STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) is a literacy program that aims to help struggling readers. Their summer camp seeks to do so through plays.

It was not always easy. Can you imagine what it's like to get 30+ fun-loving kids to get down to reading on 5 beautiful summer days? Difficult a goal as that is, STAIR made it possible. Every morning our youth and youth leaders sat down to read great books with the campers. From there, they all learned a play, made elaborate costumes, and performed for the camp. It was good and messy fun. (Though I could do with less glitter.) One highlight was the entire group acting out a segment of Hamilton.

The Center, a ministry of our Presbytery, coordinates the camp experience. Each day, a Center leader led us in theological reflection. One of the Center's main goals is to confront barriers in our culture, society, and churches. I saw one such barrier breached last week. One of the campers was really upset to find that she was the only girl in our group. Two of our middle school girls empathized with her anxiety. They comforted and befriended her. Every day after, that camper clung to our youth girls and I believe they encouraged her. Though the camper and the youth were of different backgrounds, and though one was a participant and two were volunteers, an affirming relationship was made. It was heartening to see.

If you see one of our youth walking around in a Center shirt, please ask them how it was. You will be encouraged.

Peace,

Pastor Jon

Verse and Prayer

Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. — Psalm 85:7

God of grace: when our love is lagging, encourage us. When our compassion caves, tender our hearts. When our care ends, carry us further. When our mercy ceases, remind us of yours. When our passion for justice fades, convict us. When hope is dying, empower us. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

There is still a call to help build our audio group for the band led service. A regular rotating schedule will begin this September with the start of the new school year. Please keep an ear out for a class that I am going to offer this August for those interested in learning how to work the audio board, so that any interested volunteers feel comfortable to assist the band during service.

God bless,

The Blessings of Giving
Hello all you busy traveling Ark & Dovers! I just want to remind you to stay up to date with your giving. Summer can become a little bit like riding out the storm, from a financial perspective. One month to go, and it's back to structure, school schedules and cooler temps. In the meantime, please keep those gifts coming, as they will bless you in the giving by bringing our community, our neighbors and our spirits nearer to living God's dream! If you have any questions, please reach out to Steve Debus at steven.debus89@gmail.com or Julia Kirby at maybe_soon98@yahoo.com.
Mission
Children's Book Drive! Success!
Many, many thanks for your generous contributions to the book drive! We have collected 310 new and almost new books for the children of incarcerated women and their corrections officers at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women at Jessup. The books are fabulous! The moms will enjoy reading them to their kids or sending them to their kids. Our donations are helping form bonds in a situation where that is difficult. Some of the books you have given relate to real-life situations of the kids and some of them will help them escape into imaginary worlds. Pray that the right book finds its way to the child who needs it. Your response has been fantastic! Once again, the Ark and Dove family have shown how very caring and generous you are! Help a Young Neighbor Get Back to School
The Mission Ministry is teaming up again this summer with the Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Department of Social Services to provide school supplies for local elementary and middle school students.  Social Services matched Ark & Dove with 35 students at Ridgeway Elementary School, off Telegraph Road three miles north of us.

School supplies are a prerequisite for school participation and success. The need to purchase school supplies affects our region’s households in a variety of ways. For some it’s an incidental expense, for others an annual extra expense that needs to be thoughtfully worked into the budget, and for some it’s impossible to get everything needed.

Beginning July 28, we will have sign-ups, after worship services, and provide detailed instructions with the Ridgeway supplies lists. Ark & Dove donors will select a student to sponsor, purchase the backpack and supplies, deliver them to the school by August 28th, or bring them to church by August 25th for delivery. We will also be teaming up again with Meade Middle School to collect supplies they need to support their students. For questions, or if you want to sign up but can’t do so at church, please contact Greg Makar (301-483-8255, GLMakar@juno.com).
