Dear 8th-grade families,

On Monday, October 6, the eighth-grade class will participate in a beach cleanup at M Street Beach in Boston, MA, as part of their study of global plastic pollution. This field experience will provide students with the opportunity to investigate the issue firsthand in our local community. As part of this beach cleanup, we will collect data on all items of trash we gather, and that data will be reported to the MA COASTSWEEP program as part of a larger set of citizen science data. Students will also conduct a field investigation to examine the spatial distribution of plastic pollution on the beach. We can’t wait to see what conclusions they draw from the data!

Field trip details

  • Please have your student dress for a beach trip in October in New England: closed-toed footwear for a potentially chilly beach and layers to stay warm.
  • Students will meet in the dining room at 9:00 a.m. and depart shortly thereafter. We will return for lunch, and then the students will attend their afternoon classes and activities as usual.
  • Beaver field trips do not involve any shopping. Your child does not need to bring any money on this trip.
  • We expect this to be both an educational and fun class outing, and, of course, we expect everyone to be on their best behavior.

If you have any questions, please contact me.
