Eighth grader Audrey Mitchell correctly spelled the word "pyrotechnics" to win the Ray-Pec School District Spelling Bee on Jan. 14. Eigh th grader Connor Cranston was the runner-up. Both students attend South Middle School.

Twenty-six students in grades 4-8 participated in the District Spelling Bee.  After five rounds, Audrey and Connor remained to compete for the championship.

In an incredible back-and-forth display, the two students went head to head for an a dditional 33 rounds before Audrey won in round 39.  Some of the words that Audrey and Connor had to attempt were " cachinnate," "douceur," "pleonexia," and "rhodium."

As winner, Audrey received a trophy and gift card. She will also represent Ray-Pec at the County Bee on March 11 at the Administrative Services Building. Connor also received a trophy and gift card. All other spellers received medallions. Read more
School Board filing period ends Jan. 21
Five candidates have filed to run for three available seats
As of Jan. 16, five people have filed to be candidates in the April 7, 2020, School Board election. The candidates are:  Ruth Johnson, Kim York, Paul Coffman, Precious Ali, and Shauna Stephanchick. 

The filing period continues through Tuesday, Jan. 21, for qualified individuals seeking a position on the Board. There are three positions available with three-year terms.  Board members whose terms expire in 2020 are Ruth Johnson, Kim York, and Paul Coffman.

Snow makeup days and other calendar dates
Due to the snow days on Dec. 16-17 and Jan. 17, the District calendar is revised. Students will now attend school on Tuesday, Feb. 18; Monday, March 23; and Monday, April 13. The last day of school is an early dismissal on May 20.

Other calendar dates:

Jan. 20 - School is not in session on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

 

Jan. 21 - School is not in session on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to allow staff to participate in planned professional development activities.

 

Jan. 25 - Polar Plunge at Longview Lake. Join or support The Plunging Panthers.

 

Jan. 30 - Deadline to nominate students for evaluation to participate in District's gifted program.
High School Course Planning Night is Jan. 28
Parents and students invited to attend to learn more about offerings
Ray-Pec High School Course Planning Night is 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 28. This is a come-and-go informational night designed to give parents and students valuable information about course selection and college and career planning for the 2020-2021 school year.  

You can visit a department fair to learn more about electives, core courses and programs. You can talk to course-specific teachers to see what class is best for your student. There will also be several informational meetings beneficial for grades 9-12. You can also hear more about AP course work, off-site learning opportunities, ACT Prep, scholarships, college search, and more.


Students will receive the 2020-2021 Career and Educational Planning Guide and enrollment form during advisory class on Jan. 27. Counselors will visit with each student starting Jan. 31 to help students enter their course selections into the management system.
