9/11 Day of Service 20th Anniversary Event Update
Beginning in 2002, family members who lost loved ones lead the effort for an appropriate and fitting tribute to honor their loved ones and those who volunteered to serve our country in response to the tragedy. The leadership and efforts of these family members resulted in the legislative establishment of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance in April of 2009. AmeriCorps was charged with supporting this effort across the county.

EngageAR serves as the State Service Commission recognized by AmeriCorps and charged with carrying out civic engagement activities, including but not limited to the AmeriCorps grant program, youth service initiatives, and National Days of Service.

Each year, AmeriCorps works with 9/11Day.org, grantees (EngageAR), and faith-based, local, and national organizations to expand volunteering that honors the sacrifice of the families affected by September 11, 2001.

This year, Americans across the nation will mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, united in service to their communities to honor the victims and heroes of that day.

EngageAR is partnering with Arkansas Veterans Affairs to promote and carry out the 9/11 20th Anniversary Flag of Honor Ceremony. The partners have recommended:

  • Supporting September 10th events in all 75 counties in partnership with county judges and local AmeriCorps programs

  • Encouraging schools and school-based programs to utilize 9/11 Day lesson plans developed by 9/11Day.org, in partnership with The Arkansas Department of Education

  • Hosting a central Arkansas event on September 11 between 7:46 and 9:30 am (times of the 9/11 attacks) on the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol

Each AmeriCorps program is asked to reach out to their County Judge the week of August 16 to offer assistance and determine ways AmeriCorps members can be involved. Central AR AmeriCorps programs will be asked to join the event at the Capitol.

EngageAR encourages each AmeriCorps program to host a learning session to ensure Members are educated and aware of the significance of 9/11. EngageAR will host a learning and work session at the EngageAR offices for any Central AR members able to attend. We ask that Central AR AmeriCorps Program Directors watch for a calendar invitation from EngageAR regarding this session.
