STUDENTS FROM BEYOND TOMORROW VISIT TRIBUTE
 | | Brown Japanese Cultural Association & University Committee for Japan Earthquake Response Presented Japan Earthquake Commemoration Series, March 20, 2012. |
Over the past six years, the Tribute Center has welcomed victims of other disasters to meet our guides. Sharing the personal experiences among victims has inspired hope and helped in emotional recovery and community rebuilding. On August 13, ten students from the Tohoku region in Japan will be coming to the Tribute Center to learn about the events of 9/11 and meet Tribute docents.
The high school and college students are coming to the United States under the auspices of the organization Beyond Tomorrow, which was established in June 2011 to support young victims who "despite facing great adversity after the Great East Japan earthquake, did not lose hope and continued to embrace a dream to give back to society in the future." The students have scholarships to attend top universities and are being given leadership training to become active global leaders.
In addition to visiting New York, they will visit communities in New Orleans that are rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, and will attend urban planning lectures at MIT and Harvard. One of the visiting students says "he would like to interact with victims of disasters, draw lessons of supporting the vulnerable, and replicate the learning for Tohoku and the world in the future."

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM
We regret to report that the public sources of information used to compile an article in the July e-newsletter were incorrect regarding the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (Port Authority) and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum (9/11 Memorial). The 9/11 Memorial has provided the clarifications below so our readers have the correct information.
The 9/11 Memorial and the Port Authority are currently working together to resolve building the Museum so that the project can move forward. As a proud partner of the 9/11 Memorial, the Tribute Center urges a resolution for completion of the 9/11 Memorial Museum. It's critical that both parties achieve an expeditious resolution to any outlying disputes so that this vitally important institution can be completed and open to the public in 2013.
The Tribute Center currently provides personal history tours of the Memorial and anyone who has taken one of our tours knows that our guides are from the 9/11 community including family members who lost loved ones, survivors, residents and recovery workers. We have also worked with the 9/11 Memorial to coordinate outreach to families who donated artifacts and other items to the Tribute Center collection to ensure that all 9/11 victims are honored in the Museum's memorial exhibition. The 9/11 community and public deserve the assurance that the Museum will be finished so that the memories of their loved ones are forever preserved in the memorial exhibition. This can't happen until a resolution is achieved.
According to the 9/11 Memorial, the capital construction cost of the Memorial and Museum, which amounts to around $700 million, is fully funded thanks in large part to $430 million raised privately by the 9/11 Memorial, with more than a million contributions coming from all 50 states and over 100 countries, as well as funding from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the State of New York."
Current legislation introduced to Congress by U.S. Senators Inouye (HI), Schumer (NY), and Gillibrand (NY) would provide ongoing operational support to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. This non-profit has been a model public-private partnership, and its success in operating the Memorial and creating the Museum is essential for future generations to understand the impact of 9/11.
The Tribute Center has always recognized the importance of educating about the impact of 9/11 and how we came together as a country in response to the horrific attacks. Now is the time to come together again to finish the Museum that will teach about how 9/11 changed our world and how it is possible for the best of humanity to overcome the worst hate.

USS ARLINGTON & USS SOMERSET
 | | USS ARLINGTON (LPD 24) & USS SOMERSET (LPD 25) Naming Ceremony. Photo by Craig Stawser. |
The USS ARLINGTON (LPD-24), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is planned to be the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Arlington, Virginia, the location of the Pentagon. Like her sister ships, USS NEW YORK and USS SOMERSET, she is named in commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Steel taken from the Pentagon after the September 11 attacks will be displayed aboard.
USS ARLINGTON's keel was laid down on May 26, 2008, at Northrop Grumman's Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She was launched on November 23, 2010, with her christening on March 26, 2011. Mrs. Joyce Rumsfeld, wife of former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, is the ship's sponsor. Please note that the Commissioning date has not yet been set. USS ARLINGTON will be commissioned sometime in the autumn of 2012.
The USS SOMERSET (LPD 25), the last of three Navy ships named for 9/11 attack sites - was christened July 28, 2012 in honor of the passengers and crew of Flight 93. LPD 25 is the ninth ship of the San Antonio class, and is named in honor of the courage of the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pa. on 9/11. Mary Jo Myers, wife of retired former Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Richard Myers, is the ship's sponsor and had the honor of breaking the champagne bottle across the bow during christening ceremonies for the USS SOMERSET at the Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipyard in Avondale, LA. LPD is 684 feet long with a 105-foot beam. It weighs 24,900 tons and takes five years to build. The technologically advanced transport ships are part of an Amphibious Ready Group used to transport Marines and their equipment. They have a crew of 360 and can carry up to 800 troops and their equipment.

A NEW LOOK AT THE TRIBUTE CENTER
The 9/11 Tribute Center has a new facade, inviting visitors to come inside to learn and hear "The Stories of 9/11 Told by Those Who Were There". The new signage highlights the unique programs at the Tribute Center where volunteers tell their story and experiences to thousands of educators, school groups, and visitors every year. As you pass Tribute, you'll now get a glimpse of who we are and what we do.
Four of our volunteers are featured in life-size photos, a survivor, resident, firefighter, and family member. As you walk from one side to the other, banners overhead coincide with facade images depicting different constituencies of the 9/11 Tribute Center.

PHILIPPE PETIT WALKS BETWEEN THE TWIN TOWERS
 | | Philippe Petit walks on a wire between the Twin Towers, 1974 |
Thirty-eight years ago, on August 7, 1974, shortly after 7:15 AM, French high wire artist, Philippe Petit performed the most extraordinary aerial walk of all time when he danced on a wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
This daring endeavor took six years of planning. Petit disguised himself first as a construction worker and then as a journalist and studied the mechanics and structure of the Twin Towers, including the swaying of the towers in the wind. He and a friend climbed to the roof and took photographs, and figured out how to attach the steel cable from one tower to the other, 200 feet away.
Petit and his friends devised an ingenious method to shoot the cable from the top of one building to the next. They used a bow and arrow to shoot fishing line across the gap, then were able to use rope to stretch the heavy steel cable from one roof to the other, 110 stories above ground.
On the morning of August 7, Petit left the roof of the South Tower and placed one slippered foot, then the other delicately, yet firmly onto the cable. He said later that the scariest moment was when a seagull flew next to him as if questioning why he was in the bird's space.
Guy Tozzoli, President and Founder of World Trade Center Association since 1970, was bestowed the title of President Emeritus in honor of his retirement after four decades of service as the WTCA's Chief Executive Officer. Tozzoli admired Petit's amazing bravery and gave him a lifetime pass to the Observation Deck. He was able to help suggest what he felt was an appropriate punishment, that Petit perform for children for free in Central Park.
In November 2007, Philippe Petit and Guy Tozzoli reminisced about their spectacular shared experience in a talk at the Tribute Center.
