Dear ,

Schools are out for the summer but the Tribute Center is in full gear working with teachers to develop powerful ways to bring 9/11 into the classroom. On July 10th and 11th the Tribute Center, in collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves, led a two-day professional development session for about 40 teachers exploring the many ways that 9/11 has relevance to our classrooms. Master teachers were guest lecturers and shared inspirational lessons and teaching materials.

Many students that visit Tribute are so inspired that they return to their classrooms and devote themselves to a project to serve their own community in "tribute" to the spirit of 9/11. Some classes have raised funds for our education program through bake sales and other acts of generosity.

CHANGE OF COMMAND AT SEA FOR USS NEW YORK
Captain John C. Kreitz, USS New York

On June 20, the USS New York held a change of command ceremony at sea during her first deployment.

Commander William Herrmann was relieved as New York's commanding officer by Captain Jon C. Kreitz.

Captain Kreitz will be USS New York's third commanding officer. He joined the Navy in 1982, receiving his commission at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Kreitz has most recently served as the executive assistant to the Chief of Navy Reserve and Commander, Navy Reserve Force.

"It is an incredible, humbling honor to assume command of this amazing warship and her crew who so profoundly memorialize the courage and strength of the heroes of 9/11.  I pledge to everyone who sails on New York that I will always give you and your families my fullest support and that I will ensure that together we accomplish our mission and return home safely," Kreitz told his new crew.

Commander Herrmann will next report to the United States Northern Command, in Colorado Springs.

He said, "While it is a sad day to leave New York, I do so honored to have served with arguably the finest crew in the Navy.  I could not be more proud."

TEACHING 9/11 IN THE CLASSROOM

The 9/11 Tribute Center, in partnership with Facing History and Ourselves, hosted a professional development workshop for educators on July 10-11.  The workshop was generously supported by the Matthew Sellitto Foundation. Over 30 educators from schools throughout the New York metro region and from as far as Colorado and Florida attended the two-day workshop. After guided tours of both the 9/11 Tribute Center and the 9/11 Memorial, educators took part in a series of sessions such as 9/11 - Teaching the Recent Past as History and How to Discuss 9/11 in our Multicultural Classrooms.

After two rich days of listening, discussing, and planning, educators walked away with an abundance of resources, creative project ideas, and renewed confidence in teaching the difficult, but important topic of 9/11. As one teacher stated, "I feel the impact of 9/11 and realize the need to create an emotional connection for my students through the use of oral histories."

The 9/11 Tribute Center offers professional development workshops for educators throughout the year. If you are interested in attending a future workshop, please email education@tributewtc.org to join our education mailing list.

7TH GRADE CLASS RAISES MONEY FOR TRIBUTE

Students from St. Elizabeth School in Wyckoff, NJ visit Tribute : Steven Amalfitano, Lee Ielpi, Jake Milne, Jack Walsh, Michael Amalfitano, Jennifer Adams and Vivia Amalfitano.

Vivia Amalfitano, whose family (Costalas) owns the Essex World Caf on Liberty Street, neighboring the 9/11 Tribute Center, wanted to share the experience of Tribute with her twin sons and their 7th grade class. They came to Tribute May 31st, the 10th Anniversary of End of Cleanup Operations, walked through the galleries of our museum and proceeded to the 9/11 Memorial and then finally into 7WTC. Students were so inspired by their tour and found all that they learned so informative. After discussing the trip back at their school in New Jersey, they decided to organize a fundraiser.  On Wednesday, July 18th, they dropped by the Tribute Center with a surprise donation from the money they raised. The Tribute Center is so honored and grateful to have made such an impact.

"We thought that it was such a great trip, it was inspirational.  So we decided we wanted to say 'thank you,' and do a big fundraiser to help."

Steven Amalfitano, age 13

"We were sitting in class one day and talking about the trip and one of the girls said 'Why don't we do a fundraiser?" and the teacher said, 'That's a great idea, I'll run it by the principal.... Tribute was very fascinating - the quotes described a lot of what went on. The objects helped you understand what it was like in a very clear way."

Michael Amalfitano, age 13

"It was an amazing experience.  I don't think I'll ever forget it.  I always knew 9/11 was a terrible thing, but I never got to the point I was really emotional because I didn't remember it.  Before I came to Tribute, I only heard stories from my parents and friends who were in New York, and saw stuff on TV about the Towers and the firefighters.  Before I came here, I never got the emotional sense of it.  Seeing the missing posters and the quotes from people who were there at the time was a really touching experience."

Jack Walsh, age 13

OPENING OF THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MUSEUM DELAYED

Construction delays, budget woes and perpetual feuding have stalled the building of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Construction on the Museum stopped in late 2011 due to a financial dispute between the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which owns the World Trade Center site, and  the National September 11 Memorial & Museum Foundation, the group that operates the 9/11 Memorial and future Museum.

The intended opening date for the Museum - September 11, 2012 - cannot now be reached. There is doubt over whether an opening in 2013 is possible.

The Port Authority claims the Foundation owes it more than $300,000,000. The Foundation claims that the Port Authority owes it $100,000,000.

The halt in construction added to reports of high costs - such as the Museum's projected annual operating expense of $60,000,000 - have opened a public discourse of how to memorialize 9/11 and at what cost.

After a request to the federal government for $20 million in funding the Foundation made, some victims' families have demanded that the National Parks Service take over the management of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when the Foundation's lease expires next year, pointing to the Flight 93 Memorial which is run by the National Parks Service. Other family members are opposed to this measure, fearing that more infighting and delays would result.

The projected cost for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum is $800,000,000. Rebuilding the World Trade Center has cost more than $11,000,000,000 as of June 2012.
