HONORING 9/11 FIRST RESPONDERS & RECOVERY WORKERS

On May 30, 2012, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum marked the 10th anniversary of the official end of the recovery effort at the World Trade Center site. In honor of the first responders and recovery workers, a wreath was placed at the 9/11 Memorial after a short ceremony. The event was a day to honor the strength, courage and sacrifice of the recovery workers.
After their entrance to the 9/11 Memorial, attendees were greeted and thanked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former Governor George Pataki, among others.
After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, thousands of workers spent months searching for human remains and removing debris from the site. May 30, 2002 was the official last day of the recovery operation. On that day, the last column of steel, which had been covered in memorial tributes by recovery workers, was removed from the site. The ceremony 10 years ago featured the removal of that column wrapped in a black cloth and of a symbolic empty stretcher covered with the American flag.

TRIBUTE VOLUNTEERS VISIT THE PENTAGON MEMORIAL

This May, Tribute Center volunteers and Flight '93 Ambassadors from Shanksville, PA traveled to the Pentagon Memorial. Jim Laychak, President of the Pentagon Memorial Fund and brother of David Laychak, who was murdered in the Pentagon attack, gave a tour to the volunteers, sharing personal reflections and details of the memorial design. The Pentagon Memorial is a timeline of the victims' ages, spanning from the youngest to the oldest victims. Each Memorial Unit is a cantilevered bench, a lighted pool of flowing water, and a permanent tribute to each victim.
Bruce Powers, a survivor of the Pentagon attack and a volunteer with both the Tribute Center and the Pentagon Memorial, gave an evening tour describing "the soft light that emanates from beneath each of the 184 benches, coupled with the relative quiet from fewer visitors and reduced traffic on the adjacent Highway of Heroes lends a serenity after dark that gives the Pentagon Memorial a different feel not to be missed." The 125 Pentagon victims and the 53 passengers and 6 crewmembers aboard American Airlines Flight 77 are remembered on the Memorial.
Every year, the Tribute Center volunteers visit either the Pentagon or the Flight '93 Memorial to learn first-hand about the attacks on each location. Volunteers are then able to share personal references from both sites with visitors on Tribute Center tours at the 9/11 Memorial.

| |
Do you have a 9/11 story to tell? The Tribute Center Volunteer Program will be hosting a training weekend on June 29th and 30th for people interested in sharing their 9/11 story with visitors from around the world. Our volunteer program has more than 300 outstanding active volunteers, who share their experiences of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, inform visitors about the events of that day, the aftermath of the attacks, and how we have recovered and how we continue to do so. Our tours honor the memories of 9/11 victims, families, colleagues, and survivors, as well as teaching to prevent terrorism.
The training weekend includes developing your story and learning more about the tour program. Join our lively community of survivors, family members, recovery workers, volunteers, and lower Manhattan residents. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Nancy Gamerman at volunteer@tributewtc.org or by phone at 212-422-3520, ext. 112.
