Dear ,

Since the devastating storm left damage all over the tri-state area and up the east coast, dozens of organizations have stepped forward with supplies and services to those in need. See just a few of the many opportunities below, for ways to join and donate. Your help is appreciated! Our thoughts are with all who have been affected. Pictured above, a small image of Lower Manhattan city skyline after Hurricane Sandy, without power for several days.

The work of the Tribute Center continues; we have again taken the lessons learned from September 11th and worked to apply them in a new context.  Tribute Center guides and staff went to Japan to work with communities affected by the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.  The Tribute team brought with them an origami crane made of World Trade Center steel, a symbol of empathy, healing and rebuilding.  Read the full story below.

Thanks for continuing to support our efforts in 9/11 education!

HURRICANE SANDY DISASTER RELIEF
This past Sunday, October 28, marked the beginning of what would change much of the east coast with destruction to thousands of homes and communities. Hurricane Sandy swept through neighborhoods with strong winds, extended beaches and severely water damaged homes. There are many volunteer opportunities and ways to help. Below are just a few, so check for more opportunities in your local area.

STEPHEN SILLER TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION

Web: https://www.tunneltotowersfoundation.org/

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/T2TLocalRun?fref=ts

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation was created in memory of firefighter Stephen Sillers and all other 342 firefighters who perished on 9/11. The guiding principle that shapes the Foundation is to transcend the tragedy of 9/11 through the grace that comes from the power of caring. Love and faith are the cornerstone of our Foundation. The core belief of our Foundation is that every time we change a life for the better, we change the future.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation was founded by Stephen's family and friends, a native to Staten Island, who have mobilized their efforts to provide local support in areas devastated in New York and New Jersey by Hurricane Sandy.  Please consider making a donation or volunteering with this terrific organization.  Donations may be targeted to help storm victims in Staten Island, Long Island, New York or New Jersey. Go to their website above.

If you are interested in volunteering, teams are being deployed from Staten Island, NY.  The foundation is providing between 3,000 to 5,000 meals a day, helping distribute donations, and assisting people with damaged homes.

Checks should be made payable to the "T2T Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund." Check their website for details. All donations will benefit those that have been adversely impacted by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy on the New York City and New Jersey coastlines.

HEART 9/11

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/HEART-911/290077484722

It is the mission of H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 to deliver relief help, on a volunteer basis, anywhere world-wide, where a disaster response is required to a community crisis.

H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 is a non-profit, non-sectarian, organization founded by Bill Keegan, a retired Port Authority Police Department Lieutenant, who served as Operations Commander W.T.C. Rescue/Recovery Mission.

The organization is comprised of veteran police officers, fire fighters, construction trade union workers, surviving families of those killed on September 11, 2001, and those others who share our belief that we can help ourselves by helping others. This coalition has at its core those courageous workers from the 9/11 incident who, drawing from their experiences in dealing with such a cataclysmic situation, have developed a unique overview of the coordinated and sustained effort that is needed to respond to a crisis event. Their wealth of knowledge and experience in responding to and handling disaster situations should not be allowed to dissipate. It should be used as the foundation to bring relief and assistance to any natural or man-made devastation anywhere it is needed.

H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 has been primarily working in Wantagh Long Island, Rockaway Queens and Staten Island. Check their Facebook for their current news and events.

9/11 TRIBUTE VOLUNTEERS VISIT TSUNAMI VICTIMS IN JAPAN

On October 19, a group of 6 Tribute docents and staff members traveled to Japan for 10 days to provide support for victims of the 3/11 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster.  The group traveled to the regions of northeast Japan where there was the greatest loss of life, and saw a whole town that was washed away by the sea.  They met with local officials and business leaders, mental health providers, schoolchildren, parents, teachers, senior citizens relocated due to radiation risks, and 3 high-level government officials.

The trip to Japan was undertaken in collaboration with the Japanese Medical Society of America, Rotary International and the Japan Society with invaluable efforts particularly by Robert Yanagisawa, Ikuyo Yanagisawa and Betty Borden. The trip was funded by the United States-Japan Foundation and transportation was generously contributed by American Airlines.

"There is so much work to be done, so much uncertainty about where people will live in the future," the docents realized after speaking with seniors in temporary housing. "People told us that it would be difficult for the people we met in Japan to express their feelings," said one docent, "but as soon as we started telling our stories of our losses of 9/11, they understood that we could comprehend what they are going through - and we were able to share both tears and warm smiles."

In addition to meeting with so many people in the Tohoku region, the 9/11 group brought a gift of an origami crane fabricated out of steel recovered at the World Trade Center to the City of Koriyama.  The origami crane will be the focus of a memorial to 3/11 that is being built in Kaisezan Park.  According to Kyodo News, "this is the first monument of significance from the international community to Japan's disaster-stricken northeast region." When the Tribute group arrived in Koriyama for the dedication ceremony, they learned that coincidentally it was going to take place on the anniversary of the day Sadako Sasaki died. Sadako is the little girl who in 1955 folded the tiny origami crane that is on display in the 9/11 Tribute Center.  When Sadako died in at age 12 from radiation exposure during the bombing of Hiroshima, she became a symbol of the wish for peace.

Pictured above:  Brenda Berkman, retired Captain FDNY; Tracy Gazzani, 9/11 family member who lost her son Terry Gazzani; Joan Mastropaolo, resident of Lower Manhattan; Jeanette Gutierrez, Survivor of 9/11, World Financial Center; Robert Yanagisawa, Vice President of Japanese Medical Society of America; Lee Ielpi, President of September 11th Families' Association; Jim Giaccone, 9/11 family member who lost his brother Joseph Giaccone; Meriam Lobel, Curator of 9/11 Tribute Center; Anthony Palmeri, retired DSNY and recovery worker; Mayor Masao Hara, Koriyama, Japan

The group's return was delayed by 3 days due  to Hurricane Sandy.  As soon as they landed, several of the docents began volunteering to help those here who were displaced by the storm.
