9/11 CEREMONIES FOR THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY

9/11 Memorial

In honor of the eleventh anniversary of September 11, 2001, the commemoration will be held at the 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center. This year, the reading of the names by family members will be the exclusive focus of the program. There will be six moments of silence during the observance, representing the moments each tower was struck and fell, and the moments of the attacks on the Pentagon and Flight 93. The first moment of silence will be at 8:46 AM, and houses of worship are encouraged to toll their bells at that time.

The commemoration will conclude at approximately 12:00 PM, and the 9/11 Memorial will remain open to family members until 8:00 PM. The ceremony is limited to 9/11 family members. The "Tribute in Light" will return at sundown.

9/11 Tribute Center

For the past six years, the 9/11 Tribute Center has been a central place for family members and the 9/11 community to gather to remember on the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Many have visited year after year and found the Tribute Center to be a central place to connect with others. Together we have shared hugs, looked at photos of loved ones and shared personal stories, which is of course at the very heart of the Tribute Center. This September 11th we look forward to seeing families and the 9/11 community once again. There is much to share from this year as we remember our loved ones.

We also encourage visitors to see a new Tribute Center exhibit about the work of four amazing teachers that involved their students in understanding 9/11 from unique perspectives.  Teaching the history of 9/11 is an important focus of the Tribute Center to insure future generations remember the events and the lives lost.   Another small new exhibition next to the Tribute Gallery of photos shares the wonderful work of several 9/11 family foundations.

This anniversary as always we remember the events that touched our lives.  We hope that you will be able to share this day of reflection and remembrance with us at the Center, as we all remember our loved ones who are no longer with us.

The 9/11 Tribute Center will be open to welcome all family members from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. If your loved one is not yet remembered in the Tribute Gallery, and you would like to bring a photo (up to 8" x 10"), submission forms will be available and staff will be present to accept photos.

BUILDING BIKES BUILDING DREAMS: 9/11 DAY OF SERVICE

Over 500 volunteers from the 9/11 Tribute Center built 400 bicycles for children of active duty military at the Intrepid Air & Sea Museum, Pier 86, W 46th St and 12th Ave., in partnership with the USO on September 6, 2012.

The 9/11 Tribute Center/USO volunteer event was in recognition of 9/11 being designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The USO started the program after service members repeatedly told them that the best way to help them would be to help their families who are dealing with multiple deployments. "This program is just one way we demonstrate America's gratitude for the service and sacrifice made by military families." Brian Whiting, USO Metro NY Chief Executive Officer said.

For the fourth consecutive year, in honor of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, volunteers from companies which were affected by 9/11-including BNY Mellon, American Express, AON, Cadwalader, Deutsche Bank, KBW, Marsh & McLennan, Morgan Stanley, Sandler O'Neill Partners, and Zurich- assembled bikes for military families from the tri-state region to demonstrate support for the service and sacrifice of our troops. In addition to the bikes, each child received a helmet to ensure that they are safely able to enjoy the use of their new bike. BNY Mellon is the presenting sponsor of the event.

"BNY Mellon is committed to supporting active and returning military personnel, who have done so much to support our country. The fact that more than 300 of our employees have chosen to volunteer at 'Building Bikes; Building Dreams' in honor of 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance illustrates the deep commitment our company has for this great cause," said Daisey Holmes, managing director of corporate affairs at BNY Mellon. "We are proud to join with the USO and the 9/11 Tribute Center to provide greater community support to local military families and demonstrate how much we appreciate the sacrifices made by our troops."

Volunteers were organized into teams to build the bikes, inflate the tires, ensure the quality of the teams building the bikes and place a ribbon bow and note on each completed bike. The project was a team-building and inspirational experience for the participants.

This is the fourth consecutive year that 9/11 Tribute Center has organized a service event. Jennifer Adams, CEO said, "9/11 Tribute Center volunteers share their personal stories every day at the 9/11 Memorial providing memorable tours for the public. Organizing this event for a broader range of volunteers who are survivors and for many who lost colleagues on 9/11 shares the spirit of remembering 9/11 in a positive way as well as giving back to our military."
