9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM DEDICATION & OFFICIAL OPENING

Politicians past and present attended the 9/11 Memorial Museum dedication ceremony on Thursday, May 15, 2014, along with relatives of victims. Broadway star LaChanze, who lost her husband in the attacks, Calvin Joseph Gooding, sang a glorious a capella rendition of Amazing Grace.

The Museum opened its doors to the general public on Wednesday, May 21st, giving tourists and New Yorkers their first chance to visit this long awaited museum that chronicles the events of September 11, 2001.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum serves as the country's principal institution for examining the implications of the terrorist attacks (including the February 26, 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center) and examines the aftermath, beginning in the days immediately following the attacks through artifacts, multi-media displays and personal accounts and reflections.

The Museum will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Admission is free for all visitors on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The last entry is at 7 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for online reservation two weeks in advance of each Tuesday evening starting at 9 a.m. Same-day tickets are available at the ticket windows starting at 4 p.m.

    WE WERE THERE

The 9/11 Tribute Center & 9/11 Memorial Museum are pleased to announce a collaborative program for visitors. Starting in June, Tribute volunteer guides will share their stories at a weekly public program at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, entitled We Were There, presented by the 9/11 Tribute Center. The program promises to create a personal beginning or ending for visitors during their museum experience.

We Were There like the 9/11 Tribute Center's guided tours, will give visitors the opportunity to hear compelling personal stories about 9/11 told by Tribute guides. The program offers Tribute guides another way to share their stories in fulfillment of Tribute's mission to help others connect to the human toll of the terrorist attacks. The 40-minute program will begin with a short video about the Tribute Center's unique guide program and the power of personal stories, followed by a welcome from the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

At each program, visitors will hear from two guides, each one sharing a distinct aspect and memory of 9/11. A Tribute Center moderator will set the context for the two stories through brief conversation with the guides, and then each guide will share his/her five-to seven-minute story accompanied by projected images. We Were There will conclude with a brief dialogue between the participants that connects the personal stories with 9/11 Memorial Museum artifacts. The program will be a historical journey, giving visitors a profoundly personal perspective on the events that changed our world forever.

If you were directly affected by 9/11 and would like to share your story by joining the Tribute Center program contact Nancy Gamerman at volunteer@tributewtc.org.

   FLEET WEEK 2014

This week marks the 26th year of Fleet Week NYC, the city's celebration of sea services, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard. Navy Band Northeast performed for guests on Pier 92 during the parade of ships coming into NYC on Wednesday, May 21. Celebrations began with the arrival of the ships on Wednesday, May 21, and the ships depart on Tuesday, May 27.

Today we were honored with a special guest, Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz, who walked through the galleries with Lee Ielpi, President of the 9/11 Tribute Center. In 2011, Rear Admiral Stosz, of the United States Coast Guard, was chosen by the Commandant of the United States Coast Guard ADM Robert J. Papp to become the Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy. Stosz was the first female graduate of the Coast Guard Academy to achieve flag rank and the first woman to lead a U.S. military service academy. With twelve years at sea and personal awards including three Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, it was a privilege to meet Rear Admiral Stosz for Fleet Week.

Fleet Week NYC gives visitors and citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area the opportunity to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. As they march through the city streets, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and women participate in numerous activities, performances, and festivities.

Ship tours will be held throughout the week in both Manhattan and Staten Island, tours are free and open to the public.

It is anticipated that nearly 1,500 servicemen and women will participate in this year's Fleet Week NYC. Since 1984, the week-long celebration has been held nearly every year.

    ZURICH GLOBAL VOLUNTEER DAY

The 9/11 Tribute Center has a strong partnership with Zurich. We share a commitment to remembering 9/11, paying tribute to both the loss and to the global response of service and compassion that occurred in the aftermath. This June 4th the 9/11 Tribute Center will warmly welcome about 20 Zurich staffers who will spend the day at the 9/11Tribute Center, participating in Corporate Global Volunteer Day. This collaboration between Zurich and 9/11 Tribute Center is always very powerful.

The day begins with a brief tour of the 9/11 Tribute Center, led by its President, Lee Ielpi. Participants share a brief piece of their own personal recollections of 9/11 and their reflections about the impact that 9/11 has had on our global community. This prologue sets the stage for the Volunteer Day, in which Zurich employees read and catalogue response cards written by visitors about their own 9/11 experiences and thoughts for the future. These poignant statements and drawings are written in English and languages from around the world, and ultimately displayed in the 9/11 Tribute Center or shared online via our website. Tribute's curator, Meri Lobel, explains the many categories and themes that we sort these cards into and guides the curatorial work that the volunteers will participate in. At various intervals, the participants read aloud some of the more poignant and meaningful cards that they will find. They will identify and select cards that will be scanned and placed into our searchable database. Many of the Zurich participants will assist us in translating cards from dozens of languages into English.

Tribute's relationship with Zurich is predicated on the company's commitment to remembrance and giving back to the community.  On 9/11, Zurich lost four employees, John Keohane, Peggy Alario, Kathy Moran and Lud Picarro.  The following year, to honor the memories of the four Zurich employees who perished, Zurich created the KAMP award, named for the initials of the four who perished. The award is given annually to employees who exemplify the highest values of service and compassion. On the evening of September 17th, for the third consecutive year, Tribute will be hosting the KAMP award ceremony.
