Acting NJ Governor Signs Appraisal Anti-Bias Legislation

This week, Acting Gov. Tahesha Way signed new legislation prohibiting discriminatory practices in real estate appraisals. The law makes three major changes:

  • Updates the Real Estate Appraisal Act and confirms that it is illegal for real estate appraisers to consider certain personal characteristics when determining the value of a property.
  • Requires appraisers to complete a fair housing and appraisal bias course offered by the Appraisal Qualifications Board of the Appraisal Foundation.
  • Creates another way for property owners to seek remedies for home appraisal discrimination.
