Saint John the Baptist Catholic School Newsletter

Dear SJB Families,

This week in school, we have been focusing on the virtue of Foresight. Foresight involves seeing the consequences of your actions and planning ahead. Our Parish and School Community is the result of almost one hundred years of parishoners practicing the virtue of foresight. As they planned for both the Church and School building, they wanted their hard work to improve our little corner of Fort Wayne and our portion of the larger Catholic Church. We all continue to enjoy the fruits of their virtuous work.

This summer, a few of our parents, our priests, and finance council once again used foresight and initiated the purchase of the house on the corner of Arlington and Paseena in the cul-de-sac. This means this property will be part of our future parish and school campus - whatever that may look like. The first step is to demolish the property and landscape in a way that improves the look of the neighborhood and leaves options for its use in the future. All of the funds raised at the Parish Festival this year will go towards this project. I ask you to please support the festival with your time, treasure, and talent. Sell the raffle tickets, volunteer to help, and come spend time with friends and family enjoying the auction, children's games and concessions. Send the little ones home and come back for adult time including food trucks, music and dancing. It really is so much fund and all the funds raise go to our very worthy project.

Kids games run from 11AM to 4:00PM. This year we have a unlimited bounce house pass for $10 per child with a max of $20 per family. Our festival committee wants all children to be able to bounce as often as desired. There is also a Football Accuracy Contest to win four tickets to the Colts vs. Dolphins game on 10/20. These are club level seats!!!! There are different distances for this contest based on age - so really anyone could win! Go to 4:30 Mass and then hit the food trucks at 5:30. The raffle drawing is at 7 and The Adam Strack band starts at 7:30! What a day!

Maybe years down the road, your great-grandchildren will be talking about the foresight used in purchasing and cleaning up this property. Who knows what the campus will look like at that point, but we do know families of the 07 (and its neighbors) will still be sending their children to Saint John the Baptist Catholic School and worshiping our Lord at Holy Mass at Saint John the Baptist Parish. Please, please, please support the Parish Festival!

See you at Mass!

Virtue of the Week - Foresight

Foresight is an underlying virtue to the cardinal virtue of Prudence. The Gift (of the Holy Spirit) of Counsel perfects the virtue of Foresight.

Definition: Thinking ahead; considering the consequences of one's actions. .

Foresight in Practice:

  • I have an awareness of what's coming up on my calendar.
  • I make a plan to accomplish all of my tasks.
  • I think before I speak.

Saintly Example- Saint John Bosco

John devoted himself to training boys how to make a living and teaching them to love God. He believed that, instead of threatening young people with punishments, it was more effective to show them they were loved and trusted. Because of his foresight, many young men were kept off the streets and away from those dangers and temptations, embracing virtue and holiness instead.

Scripture: Proverbs 20:4

In seedtime sluggards do not plow; when they look for the harvest, it is not there

Prayer

Dear Jesus,

When I come upon situations that require serious thought, please send Your Holy Spirit to guide me, that I may always do Your holy will. Guide me with Your counsel, and give me the courage to act rightly when it is difficult.

Amen.

Mike’s Car wash fundraiser is back. The car washes are $11 or $22 each (they can be upgraded at time of use). Each person can choose to have their wash delivered electronically or on paper. These will be sold 9/9-9/23 and delivered the week of the 10/7. We ask that each family either sell 10 washes or sends in $100. Last year we raised over $3000 and were able to give each teacher $150 to purchase items for their classrooms.  Checks should be made out to Saint John the Baptist.  Money must be turned in with order form. All money raised will go directly to each teacher to buy resources for their classroom. The top 3 fundraising families will each receive a prize!

Middle School Winners

Throughout the week teachers in middle school collect names of students going above and beyond, whether it is helping a classmate, participating in class, answering hard questions, volunteering at Mass, etc. Then once a week each middle school teacher draws out a name from their collection to get a small prize. All names eligible for the drawing are placed on a bulletin board in the middle school hallway for all to see.
