Sophomores and Families,
We are approaching the end of Osprey Blocks and starting to direct our thoughts back to the regular school schedule. As a continuation of the orientation activity that Elliot did with the 10th grade, I want to encourge some self-refection about academic habits and encourage goal setting for students.
Reflect on your 9th grade year:
- How did 9th grade go me overall?
- What grades did I earn/what was my overall (cumulative) GPA?
- What choices did I make and which behaviors did I engage in that brought me success?
- What choices did I make and which behaviors did I engage in that did not bring me success?
- If there were things that didn't work for you last year, what can you do differently this year? How can you change your behavior to achieve different results?
Check out this list of academic habits to try and pick 3 to try next week!
Mark your calendar for Sophomore & Family postsecondary night on Wednesday, Nov. 1st from 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Please read all the way to the bottom of this week's newsletter - I have included some information about two really great programs for free tuition and training for certain high demand and also some medical jobs in Colorado: Care Forwad Colorado and Career Advance Colorado.
Finally, I encourage Sophomores to attend one or more of the upcoming college fairs. Now is the time to gather information and begin creating a mental (or actual) file about what you are looking for in a college/postsecondary educational program. I am not the omniscient college Oracle - I know a lot of things, but not ALL of the things. The postsecondary counseling process works best when we both do work...so go out there and learn some stuff! Every student I see at the college fair at DHS will receive a prize from me next Wednesday, and each person that attends the fair will go into do a drawing to win one of two $10 Durango Joe's gift cards.

Sophomore Postsecondary planning:
what you should be thinking about right now
-
Grades: Do well and challenge yourself in your classes - Colleges will look at your cumultive GPA as well as grades in your individual classes. Even if you are not sure whether or not you plan to go to a 4-year college, a 2-year college, or a trade school or other training program, getting good grades now will ensure that you have options when the time comes.
-
It's Time to get involved in extracurricular activities: Get involved in something outside of the classroom! Explore your interests and strengths through extracurricular activities! Doing things in addition to school can help you gain new skills such as time management, organization, leadership, and problem solving. Plus you might make some new friends!
-
College Research: Attend college visits at AHS and College Fairs whenever possible (see below for two in-person college fairs and links to virtual fairs!) - Start to build a knowledge base about what is out there. Chat with college representatives when they visit AHS to learn about what colleges are like so you can start to figure yout what YOU like and are looking for. Check the College and Career Events calendar regularly for upcoming college visits.
