A SBIF Project:
Before & After...
La Pena Restaurant
4212 N. Milwaukee Avenue
La Peña Restaurante opened its doors in 2001 in Portage Park, serving traditional Ecuadorian food. La Peña," means a place where people have different choices – food, drinks, live music, poetry, and dance – all at the same time. Despite challenges during the pandemic, owner Jaime Castillo worked with SomerCor to support the restaurant and plan for the future.
Mr. Castillo applied for a SBIF grant which allowed him to rebuild the façade, install new storefront windows, add a new glass entrance, and make HVAC system improvements. He credits the program for La Pena's continued growth afforded by an inviting appearance and changes allowing improved customer service; most of all employing more people and giving back to the community."

Our Roots Chicago Needs Your Input
Trees improve air quality, reduce pollution and make City areas attractive, increasing property values. A single mature tree can provide enough shade to lower temperatures by as much as 20 degrees in hot weather and provide a wind break in winter's bluster. Our Roots Chicago aims to plant 75,000 parkway trees in Chicago neighborhoods by 2026. All you have to do is Submit a tree planting request so that the Bureau of Forestry can schedule a tree planting on the parkways you see that need them.

Tree Services, Free Mulch
In addition to planting trees via OurRoots/Chicago, the Bureau of Forestry, a division of Chicago's Department of Streets & Sanitation, is responsible for tree trimming, removing dead or damaged trees, and resulting debris after inclement weather. It recycles the debris into construction-grade lumber and wood chips sold to vendors.
For residents, wood chips are free as mulch per availability, at the four locations at left, from
6:30 AM to 2 PM weekly.

You Can 'Bearly' Resist
The Loaf Lounge - 2934 N. Milwaukee Avenue
If you've watched the hit movie "The Bear" on Netflix, you know it's not about football or the zoo. It's a fictional Chicago Italian Beef stand, and the character Marcus bakes an out-of-this-world chocolate cake. In the real world, you can buy a sweet slice at the Loaf Lounge in Avondale; owner Sarah Mispagel creates the sweets we see on screen, and if you stop by for breakfast, brunch, orf lunch, you'll find the Cafe's menu equally tempting.
