Christ the King School Newsletter - September 17, 2019
Dear Christ the King Catholic School Families,

In Good Faith and with much gratitude for your giving ways, the 2019 Fund a Need that focused on school-wide safety and technology is virtually complete:

  • In the fall of 2018 Christ the King Catholic School initiated the exploration of upgrading our existing copper connection to the internet. We as a school had outgrown our modest bandwidth needs/speeds with our goal being to increase technology use in the classrooms. Thus, we choose to pursue a dedicated fiber line from a telecom provider, and a three bid process was initiated. The project to install the one-gigabit fiber (1 gigabit=1000 mega bits/sec) line to our school was completed in May of 2019 with the capability to provide ten times the bandwidth if necessary.

  • In addition, a school-wide public address system with internet-based speakers is now in place and was affixed internally/externally to our school buildings. The result helped immensely, yesterday morning, with the surprise rain as morning prayer and announcements were held inside via our new PA System. With inclement weather in the future, and with safety drills, announcements, etc. we can now project messaging to all environments of our school’s demographic footprint. Further, we have a new cloud-based phone system (new phone provider activated August 1, 2019) that grants us the ability to page/announce throughout our campus. Lastly, this structure aided in replacing our 50-year-old bell system with a new web-based bell controller as well.

  • During the installation of our new PA System, the decision was made to remove the audio system used for morning prayer and assembly…. the last piece, occurring now, is to place a new mic/speaker system that will be installed by the end of the month to fully complete last year’s Fund a Need.

Abundant blessings and much gratitude,
Mr. Silveira
Christ the King Catholic School
Please join us in praying the godfather of Kaitlyn Greer (Gr. 2) who went to heaven last week, for the father of Mrs. Callahan our 5th grade IA and grandfather of Jake Callahan (Gr. 4) and for the grandfather of Miss Halsey, our religion and music teacher who are ill, and for Robin Morley, CTK Parish Office Manager, as she recovers from surgery . We pray for the special intentions of our school and parish staff, for the needs and cares of others, and for all those who are suffering from illness, loss, loneliness or other challenges. May God keep us all in His tender and loving care.

Reminders and Notices
Group Email Communication: PTG has been receiving some questions regarding email privacy - specifically why room parents are not able to share email addresses and the changes in how invitations to school related functions are sent. This is a school policy, not a PTG decision, which was put in place to honor the privacy of each parent at the school. Emails are shared with the school for communication purposes. If the parent wishes the email to be made public, it will appear in the upcoming school directory.

The class lists used by room parents are created and edited by the school, based on the emails used for constant contact, and the email addresses are not visible to the room parents. This assures that every parent is included, while maintaining privacy and minimizing the amount of emails received. Traditional class events that are held for all 9 grades (ornament exchanges and beginning of the year class parent socials) will go through these lists to avoid calendar conflicts and ensure that all are included for these events.

If you have any further questions regarding this policy, please contact the school.
School pictures going home today! School picture packets are going home with your children today. If your child was absent on picture day or you would like your child's picture retaken, Lifetouch will be here next Wednesday, September 25th at 8:00am. Please have your child come in dress uniform. For retakes, please send the packet back with your child on retake day. For absent retakes, you can order here.
We’re ready to start band! If your child is interested in playing a band instrument, Method to the Melody conducts an after school program for students in grades 2-8 here at Christ the King School. Sign up here!

Only one week left before the big event!

If your student hasn’t started requesting pledges yet, now is the time! There are three ways students can be sponsored:

  1. Online here: Here are the simple instructions for signing up your student/s. Once you register, you will have access to share the link via email and/or social media.  The site also provides an instant confirmation and receipt including tax ID #, plus it alerts you when someone donates so you can send a thank you email.
  2. Pledge and Prize Envelope:  Students will be seeking FLAT RATE tax deductible sponsorships. Please collect money (cash or check) at the same time as the pledge. The office has extra envelopes if you need more.
  3. Company Matches:  Did you know many Bay Area employers have donation matching programs designed to give back to the community and support their employee’s interests? It is a great way to double (even triple or quadruple!) your student’s fundraising efforts and help support our school. Easy and effective with a great impact! Just speak with your company's HR department so they can direct you on their procedure.

Last week we presented the (AWESOME!) prizes to the students. When your child has finished requesting pledges, indicate the amount he or she raised on the  Pledge Envelope . Then, flip the envelope over to the  Prize Selection  side. Follow the instructions on the bottom of the form and select the prizes your student earned. Envelopes and all monies collected are due WAJAT day.

Every dollar raised by the WAJAT is accounted for. Our event expenses are minimal (prizes and some operational expenses), and the rest of the funds go directly to our kid’s education. This year your dollars will pay for the following:

  • New Leaf Science (K - 8th Grades)
  • Camp Caritas (7th Grade)
  • Technology upgrades (iPads for classroom use, K - 8th Grades)

The school needs two carts of iPads (40 per cart) to share among the 9 classrooms. In addition to the iPads, iPad protective cases, and portable locking carts, teachers need training so they can make the most out of these effective teaching tools. The total cost is $40,000. If we raise the same amount as last year, we can cover the cost of a cart of iPads plus some teacher training. The more we raise, the more iPads the school can purchase!

Are you wondering how the funds were distributed last year? Thanks to our generous community, the kids raised almost $45,000! Same as this year, we paid for the New Leaf Science Program and Camp Caritas. In addition, last year each homeroom teacher (K - 8th Grade) received a budget of $2,000 to spend on upgrading technology, field trips, books, etc. Every penny was spent by our happy teachers!

Tuesday, September 24 is Walk-a-Jog-a-Thon day!  Students may wear free dress (weather appropriate, athletic attire encouraged, and tennis shoes are a must. No tank tops. Please click here for free dress guidelines). Don't forget sunscreen, hydration and a good breakfast! Please encourage integrity and good sportsmanship so all children can have a great time while building our community.

Parents and siblings are welcome to come and cheer on the students. The event starts at 10:00am and the large parking lot will be closed. Parents volunteering or attending the event may park in the small lot, the dirt lot, on Brandon or Gregory. If parking on the street, please be considerate of our neighbors and do not block driveways.

If you signed up to volunteer, expect an email with specific information later this week. We still have a few openings, don’t forget the hours worked for the WAJAT count as fundraising hours.

Altar Serving As we begin the new school year, we would like to invite all the 4th through 8th grade students to consider training to become an altar server.  Click here for a registration form with the upcoming dates and times for the training. We encourage the students to at least come for the training and to serve a few masses and then decide if they want to continue. No harm, no foul if they decide to not continue. We find that once they are comfortable, they usually do continue. We need your help in the important ministry.
