Grateful Remembrance
Psalm 63

This is a time for grateful remembrance. It’s another Memorial Day weekend, but not like any we’ve ever experienced.

And while many will go through the “Roll Call” of those they knew who gave their lives in defense of our country this Memorial Day, I’d like to encourage all of us to consider going through a different kind of “Roll Call”, a roll call of the faithful love of God in our lives. That’s what I believe is going on in the life of David in Psalm 63.

Psalm 63 —   A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.  1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.  2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.  3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.  4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.  5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,  6 when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;  7 for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.  8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.  9 But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth;  10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.  11 But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped.

When you wake up in the middle of the night and you just feel lost in this life, your soul feels parched, you are emotionally and spiritually famished…what can you do?

Don’t just count your SHEEP - Remember God’s FAITHFUL LOVE .

Encouragement from a NightSong…

  1. Let Present Misery & Past Memories drive you to God (v.1-2)

You don’t know that God is all you need until He’s all you’ve got!

Take some time and think back to when you first realized just exactly who Jesus is. Remember when it was in your life when you realized that Jesus is God who became a man so He could live the life we were created to live and chose not to live and then give Himself as a sacrifice in your place to satisfy the just wrath of God on your sin. And let that memory drive you to God today.

2. Let God’s faithful love compel & satisfy you (v.3-5)

When you can’t worship God together, remember His faithful love!

2 Corinthians 5:14–15 — 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;  15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Focused thinking on the faithful love of God for you in Christ is like sitting down to a banquet where your mouth is filled with praise to God.
3. Let restless nights drive you to remember God’s faithful love (v.6-8)

When you lay awake in the middle of the night and your mind is racing a hundred miles an hour and you just can’t seem to turn it off…don’t just count your sheep; remember God’s faithful love.

Romans 8:38–39 — 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,  39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 5:18–19 — 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,  19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,

Isaiah 41:10 — 10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

4. Let’s anticipate celebrating the victory that Jesus has secured (v.9-11)

The designs of those who would seek to deny the purposes of God will end up being the instrument of their demise.

Luke 19:38–40 — 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”  39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”  40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Let’s be a people who find our satisfaction in God’s faithful love and let misery or memories drive us to remember His love for us in Christ! That would be a grateful remembrance this Memorial Day!

Let’s talk about a grateful remembrance…

  1. What does this song tell you about God?
  2. What do you think God wants us to know as a result of this song?
  3. How does this song make you feel?
  4. What could you do to increase your desire to know God (v.1)?
  5. When people look at your life, what qualities of Jesus do you think they can see (v.2)?
  6. How is it that God’s steadfast love is better than life (v.3)?
  7. Recall the best meal you have ever had. What would it be like for your soul to be satisfied like that meal satisfied your hunger (v.5)?
  8. How have you dealt with restless nights in the past (v.6)?
  9. How should we feel about those who seek the disregard the purposes of God now (v.9-10)?
  10. 10.What do you miss most about not being able to gather for worship?

Songs for Service

Blessed Be Your Name

Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out, I'll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out I'll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name, oh

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

God you give and take away
Oh you give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name, oh

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Faithful to the End

We're heaven-spun creations
His pride and adoration
Treasures woven by his love

His careful hands they hold us
Safe within His promise
Of calling and of destiny

We're heaven-spun creations
His pride and adoration
Treasures woven by his love

His careful hands they hold us
Safe within His promise
Of calling and of destiny

I will sing of all You've done
I'll remember how far You carried me
From beginning until the end
You are faithful, faithful to the end

A Father's heart that's for me
A never ending story
Of love that's always chasing me

His kindness overwhelming
And hope for me unending
He's never given up on me

I will sing of all You've done
I'll remember how far You carried me
From beginning until the end
You are faithful, faithful to the end

I will sing of all You've done
I'll remember how far You carried me
From beginning until the end
You are faithful, faithful to the end

Until the end, until the end
Until the end

There wasn't a day
That You weren't by my side
There wasn't a day
That You let me fall
All of my life
Your love has been true
All of my life
I will worship You

There wasn't a day
That You weren't by my side
There wasn't a day
That You let me fall
All of my life
Your love has been true
All of my life
I will worship You
I will worship You
I will worship You
I will worship You

Great is Thy faithfulness Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto me

O Praise the Name

I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me.
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet.
My Savior on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb.
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn,
The Son of heaven rose again.
O trampled death where is your sting?
The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

He shall return in robes of white,
The blazing Son shall pierce the night.
And I will rise among the saints,
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
