COVID-19 & THE 2020-21 SEASON
RETURN TO HOCKEY UPDATES
Happy Labor Day Hockey Fam! Here is today’s update:

MAHA has published their Return to Play Standards. In our email yesterday, we mentioned we were holding off on sharing the document until MAHA’s Zoom call this week - since they have published it prior to that call, we are providing the link here.

Earlier today, MAHA also published their statement regarding facial coverings. That can be found here.

We know there are strong opinions on both sides of the facial covering mandate. Until the Governor clarifies the facial covering verbiage in the Executive Orders specific to allowing rinks to reopen (EOs 175 & 176), the requirement from MAHA is following those EO mandates. If you read MAHA’s statement today, it’s clear that they are seeking clarification while also presenting alternate options that would still allow youth hockey to happen in Michigan. Again, it’s a holiday weekend, and we are asking for your patience as we pass along your concerns to rink ownership, state and local officials, and our governing body (MAHA), as KOHA does NOT set the guidelines, we simply communicate what we are given, and pass along concerns to the aforementioned entities. As we receive clarification, updates, and answers, we will continue to provide those in a timely manner.

We have been asked about protocols and safety measures for the upcoming on-ice activities (camps, clinics and tryouts), and while we are listing some general information below, there will be more communication as each event nears (dressing protocols, spectator limits, etc.):
  • Parents, players, coaches and KOHA staff will adhere to facial covering mandates.
  • Parents, players, coaches and KOHA staff will adhere to building requirements regarding entry, exit, social distancing guidelines, etc.
  • Players will be expected to bring their own water bottle, clearly marked with their name.

We have put maximum capacities on our clinics and tryout prep camps in an attempt to manage interactions (and many are full or almost full). Hockey Director, Matt Kakabeeke said, “For clinics and tryouts we will do our best to spread the ice and players; however, hockey is an invasion/attacking sport that includes body contact for all ages. I plan to avoid large congregations, and may assign players to specific groups/coaches prior to entering the playing surface, and would communicate that either via email or during check-in.”

You’ll notice our camp/clinic sessions are running on the hour, which means a 50 minute ice times and a 10 minute resurfaces. Again, we will communicate the dressing and spectator/parent guidelines once those are confirmed, and whether or not LiveBarn will be activated. For clinics where your player has two sessions per day, we expect that parents and players will not linger in the rink between sessions.

For tryouts and evaluation skates: Rather than utilizing our tryout jerseys and the usual distribution/collection process, we will be using numbered pinnies that players will be assigned at the start of tryouts, and will be responsible for throughout the entire tryout process.
OUR CLUB CULTURE
Nothing about this season is normal. Again we thank those of you that have reached out to offer support. Your patience is appreciated as we navigate everything to get the 2020-21 season going, and work with our partners to provide the best chance for rinks to stay open and do everything we can to ensure the completion of our hockey season.

Remember, “We A.R.E. KOHA” - which stands for Attitude, Respect & Effort, is more than just words - it’s who we are. It’s our club culture, and, as parents, modeling those principles during such an unusual time for our kids is vital (both in-person and on social media). Thank you, in advance, for helping foster a positive return for our players.
