"Flood of 1927" History Talk
at Jeanerette Museum
Charles Ray Brassieur
JEANERETTE, La. -- Charles Ray Brassieur, Ph. D will discuss the "Flood of 1927" at 6 p.m. on April 5, 2017 at the Jeanerette Museum.

The program marks the 90th anniversary of the flood and addresses how it affected life in Louisiana. Audience members will be allowed to briefly share family stories following the talk.

Brassieur, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will discuss what caused the flood and how it affected Louisiana and local residents. Charles Caillouet will serve as co-presenter.

Working early in his career as an archaeologist, and for much longer as an ethnographer, Brassieur has been drawn to the study of local folklife, material culture, and culture-ecological issues. In 1980, he became curator at the Acadian House Museum, within the Longfellow-Evangeline State Park. During the 1970s and 1980s, he conducted research in the Atchafalaya Basin area, Mississippi River parishes, and throughout Louisiana's southern coastal parishes.

During the past 30 years, Brassieur has documented a wide range of Louisiana watercraft. His field and archival research in maritime and wetlands ethnography has resulted in numerous popular and scholarly publications, exhibitions and media presentations. His current interests include the study of traditional plant knowledge, Louisiana ethnobotany, and applied research involving local food movements.

Brassieur spearheaded the development of the Healer's Garden at Vermilionville. He serves as Science Team Member of the South La. Ethnobotany and Diabetes Collab, a group he helped to form in partnership with UL Lafayette, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Rutgers, and the USGS Wetland Research Center. Brassieur also serves as member of numerous committees and boards concerned with historic preservation, cultural heritage and civic improvement.

Charles Caillouet is a founding member of the Friends of Atchafalaya (FOA), a non-profit organization created in 2006 to promote conservation and awareness of the Atchafalaya Basin.

Caillouet is also the Ascension Parish member of the Atchafalaya Trace Commission, the managing entity of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. He studies and writes about the complex issues involved in managing the Atchafalaya as a flood way.

This free program, to be held at the museum located at 500 E. Main St. in Jeanerette, is suitable for an adult audience. Seating may be limited and taken on a first come, first serve basis.
