Year's Two BEST 2018 Burgundy Buys
The Blanc is a racy, silky, mineral-driven + Meyer lemon citrus-laden delight. It reminds me of a "Little LAFON" Meursault

"Floral aromas are wrapped in tropical fruit / on the edge of lemon, lychee + ground up stone / Plucky acidity / balanced by a clean, pure sense of its terroir."
94 Points - Somm Journal

"Bright aromas of lemon rind, passion fruit + floral nuances lead to sleek, delicious + vibrant mid-weight flavors"
-Allen Meadow's BurgHound

The Premier Cru Rouge is luscious + BURSTING with brooding black cherry.
  • The Protheau family has been growing vines in Burgundy from father to son for seven generations since 1720.

  • Another gem of a village in the Cote Chalonnaise region about 15 miles south of Puligny / Chassagne-Montrachet / Meursault.

  • For my visual people, here's my crudely highlighted map →

  • 2018 = Highly-recommended superb vintage

  • All that is left is 15 out of the only 1,000 cases made of the blanc + 10 out of 3,000 for the rouge.

  • Both are drinking deliciously smooth right now + will be on cruise-control through 2027

  • Lowest prices in the country by a massive margin for both wines

  • Finally back in the USA thanks to importer Fran Kysela!

The "Clos l'Evêque" Premier Cru vineyard of the red was, in the XVIII century, considered the best vineyard in Mercurey. It belonged to the Bishopric of Chalon-sur-Saône (located close to Mercurey) and the wine produced was used for the bishop' receptions as well as for the masses, where only the best wine could be served to God! In French "Evêque" means Bishop. It is also called a "Clos" because the vines were once surrounded by a wall, some of which still remains. (Thank you timeless wines!)

A venerable cornucopia of ripe, berry fruit shows a predominance of raspberry & black cherry, is supported by tertiary nuances from extended barrel-aging.

If you're a fan of Pinots from Cali & Oregon, but were wanting to start exploring the wide world of French Burgundies, this would be an ideal introduction! ~david.
2018 Chateau d'Etroyes Mercurey Blanc "Les Ormeaux"

94 Points - The SOMM Journal:
"Floral aromas are wrapped in tropical fruit. The mouthfeel is steely; on the edge of lemon, lychee and ground up stone. Plucky acidity: a fine line of a high-wire act, balanced by a clean, pure sense of its terroir." (12/2021)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"A touch of chalk surrounds the lemony notes of wheat bran on the nose of this wine. Chalkiness continues on the smooth, textured and slightly creamy palate, which has lemony overtones. Freshness makes for a bright yet smooth finish. - Anne Krebiehl (12/2020)

Allen Meadow's BurgHound:
"Bright aromas of lemon rind, passion fruit and floral nuances lead to sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors that possess good delineation while offering a clean and markedly dry finish that flirts with austerity. This isn't elegant but it is refreshing and a wine that should drink well after only a year or two of bottle aging." (Oct 10, 2020)

2018 Chateau d'Etroyes Mercurey Rouge Premier Cru "Clos l'Eveque"

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"The toast, tar and licorice notes of oak play on the nose of this wine, obscuring the cherry fruit. Ripe, juicy dark cherry and a vein of freshness show on the palate as the oak notes recede and form a backdrop along with firm but fine tannin. The finish is balanced, rounded and juicy." - Anne Krebiehl (12/2020)
