A good portion of juice that is meant for William Randell Shiraz gets sold off each year to the Penfolds winery for their $700+ Shiraz. I'm sure the juice fetches a high dollar for Thorn Clarke, but it leaves us with a smaller allocation of William Randell.
This wine was the first in the higher-end Shiraz labels that Thorn Clarke created after Shotfire Shiraz. To me William Randell is still one of the best value upper level Shiraz on the market.
This is another tooth-staining vintage with a deep purple tone. Cooked game, blueberry, with slight hints of chocolate and earth billow from the nose. Full-bodied massive wine with good acidic backing and well integrated tannin that round out the palate on this monster. The finish is long and generous with a graceful elegant ending.
Drink now or over the next 10 to 12 years.
"From the estate St Kitts and Milton Park Vineyards, night-harvested, each block separately vinified in 4t open fermenters, matured for 18 months in American oak (40% new). A powerful, full-bodied shiraz with blackberry fruit, tannins and oak all driving the long palate. The absorption of the oak into the fabric of the wine is particularly impressive."
