Katelyn's Pick: All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries

"All Systems Red," the first installment in The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, is a novella which blends science fiction with elements of mystery and introspection. The story follows Murderbot, a security android equipped with human emotions but struggling with its own autonomy. Unlike typical AI protagonists, Murderbot is refreshingly relatable with its sarcastic and humorous narrative voice, making it easy for readers to empathize with its desire for self-discovery and purpose.

The novella explores themes of identity, autonomy, and the blurred lines between humanity and artificial intelligence. Murderbot's internal struggles and its interactions with the human characters compel the reader to explore what it means to be alive and self-aware.

The pacing is brisk and engaging from start to finish, and the world-building is well-crafted, offering a glimpse into a future where technology and corporate interests shape human existence. Overall, "All Systems Red" is a standout entry in The Murderbot Diaries, leaving readers eager to explore more of this fascinating and unconventional protagonist's adventures in subsequent installments.

Denise's Pick: Iris

"When you don't dress like everyone else, you don't have to think like everyone else"

-Iris Apfel

It saddens me to write that we lost an amazing human, a fashion icon, and one of my all-time favorite artists this month. Iris Apfel was style incarnate, and she did everything in her own way. Case in point: she was in her 90s when she became a world-renowned fashion icon. Known for her signature large-framed glasses, playful, bold accessories, bright colors and expressive, mixed prints, nobody had drip like Iris.

Iris, the documentary, is available on Kanopy or DVD through Mesa County Libraries.
