History:
Elvio Cogno was founded in 1990 by Elvio himself, a 4th generation winemaker, after working for years with the venerable Barolo producer Marcarini at La Morra. He bought a splendid, historic 18th-century farmhouse on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area. (Novello is one of the 11 communes in which Barolo is produced.) Here is what Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had to say about this site:

"Of the many great contributions made by the winemaking team at Elvio Cogno, perhaps the greatest is the importance they brought to the Ravera cru of Novello. Little-known before their efforts, this vineyard has risen in high regard in recent years and continues to show impressive potential."

Elvio passed away in 2016, but not before passing the winery along to his daughter, Nadia, and her husband, Valter Fissore, who had worked beside Elvio for 25 years. Together they continue the fine tradition of elegant wine that Elvio began: Galloni called their 2015s "compelling" and their 2016s "absolutely gorgeous."

About the 2015 Barolo Vintage:

From James Suckling's Notes on the 2015 Vintage:
Check out the full article HERE.

"The full capability of the nebbiolo grape’s expressive nature is alive in Barolo 2015 and it is a vintage to really celebrate. In general, the wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine and powerful tannins. They are toned, muscular and athletic, coupled with freshness, a keen sense of focus, great length, and an astute balance."

"These wines also have the great fortune of offering instant appeal as well as more in-depth attraction, which is the hallmark of a truly great vintage. These wines will satisfy both the experienced palate and educated connoisseur. They are also very expressive and show strong typicity by communes and also single vineyards. But if there was one attribute to single out, it is the way in which these wines combine power with elegance. They are thrilling to taste."

98 Points - Luca Gardini:
"This one represents a generous interpretation of exceptional cru and lean, but also vigorous shoulder. It is sensationally full-bodied, with Nebbiolo deriving from old vineyards. Its nose is intense, mentholated and smoked, while its sapid mouth provokes several pleasurable sensations, revealing toasted dry fruit and liquorice notes. Its persistence can be considered viscose, balsamic and mostly bewitching."

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"New leather, balsamic herb, rose, truffle and woodland berry aromas take shape in the glass along with a whiff of charcuterie. The focused, savory palate has a great depth of flavor, doling out raspberry compote, cinnamon, crushed mint and a hint of cocoa alongside a backbone of firm tannins and fresh acidity. It still needs time to fully develop. Drink 2023–2035." Kerin O’Keefe (10/1/2019)

96 Points - Wine & Spirits:
"Valter Fissore’s Ravera is brilliant in the warm 2015 vintage, striking a balance between fleshy cherry fruit, fresh florals and chiseled tannins. The wine feels generous yet precise, the flavors and aromas amplifies by the lively acidity that draws them out in a long, vertical finish."

95 Points - James Suckling:
"Beautifully pure and seamless Barolo with superb balance. Bright strawberry and floral aromas and attractive sweet spices, leading to a palate with assertive, juicy tannins that carry rich, fresh red-plum and cherry flavor. Power with elegance. Try from 2023." - (6 Jan, 2019 )
