Their Greatest Vintage to Date = Wine of the Year Repeats
Dear Artisans,

These are the two best 'True Burgundian-Styled' American Pinot Noirs we have tasted this year, and they truly deserve all the acclaim thus far. Alas, the finest are always fleeting; either long sold out or so tightly-allocated they are untouchable.

Through our strong relationships, we have secured an extremely limited additional allocation which we are thrilled to offer you today! Don't miss out on this rare opportunity to secure the finest from the greatest vintage *the just-minted West Sonoma Coast AVA has had to date!

The True Sonoma Coast Gets Wine Appellation Status
After a decades-long battle, federal authorities have approved the West Sonoma Coast AVA (link)
More Background: RAEN is run by American wine royalty: Carlo and Dante Mondavi, grandsons of Napa legend Robert Mondavi and sons of Continuum’s Tim Mondavi. With the same expertise and unrelenting passion that drove Robert to develop the world-famous Opus One and Tim to craft 100-point reds, Dante and Carlo are dedicated to Pinots of elegant, Burgundian finesse from the wild Sonoma coast.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous previously wrote: “Frankly, I had a hard time moving on from these wines as they were so deeply impressive from the moment I first tasted them."

After working with their father in building Continuum, Dante and Carlo decided to go off on their own and venture out to the West Sonoma Coast to make cool climate Pinot Noir that can stand on its own on the world stage. RAEN is a Pinot Noir domaine focused on yielding aromatic, lifted wines of finesse and elegance from three “grand cru” vineyards capable of sitting among the worlds finest.

In the cellar RAEN strives to capture the delicate micro flora from their vineyard in they wines. They achieve this by utilizing whole cluster fermentations relying only on the native yeasts that exist naturally on the grapes giving us a deeper connection to our sites. After fermentation the wines are pressed and aged in neutral French oak barrels allowing the wines to evolve in a gentle manner without overpowering the delicate aromatic notes. The wines will age between 10 to 20 months depending on the vintage and site. Once the Mondavis feel the wines are ready RAEN is then bottled without fining or filtration to further keep these pure delicate notes intact.

We have only 12 bottles of the 99-point Sea Field, and 24 bottles of the Royal St. Roberts Cuvee. It's also the last call for Steve Kistler's 98-point "Outrageously Delicious" Occidental Pinot, included down below. Don't drag your feet on these!

Have a great week,
—James Tran
2021 RAEN Fort Ross-Seaview Sea field Pinot Noir
99 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is a transparent jeweled ruby color and takes things up a notch with its superb aromatics of ripe cherry, gravelly earth, and fresh rose petal. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannins and notes of ripe black raspberry and fresh herbs, it maintains a light sunny touch to its slightly darker profile. Drink 2025-20240.

98 Points - James Suckling:
Extremely aromatic with plums, crushed strawberries, rose flower, powdery dirt, before turning to cherries. Hints of flower stems. Perfumed. Full-bodied and very, very firm. Rather steely. Tight at the end. It opens beautifully in an hour or so. Drink after 2025.

95 Points - Wine Spectator:
Shows mulled blood orange, strawberry and raspberry fruit, which meld nicely with a vibrant savory edge, along with hints of red tea and incense. The finish is underscored by crushed sea shell hints, which add nice lingering tension.

95 Points - Vinous:
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is intensely floral and full of flavor, with cool-climate savoriness driving a core of bright, red-toned fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the 2021 has a ton of complexity waiting to emerge. Time in the glass brings out compelling inner perfume and quite a bit of nuance. But, it is tightly wound and quite reticent at this stage.

Winery Notes:
Our 4.8 Sea Field Vineyard (monopole) produces our most elegant wines year in and year out. This unique bottling comes from an ancient Sea Field of diverse marine soils and fractured bedrock dating back between 66 and 200 million years. Soaring 1,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean and less than 3 miles from its waters, Sea Field is both our most coastal and highest elevation pinot noir site. The combination of these elements creates Sea Field.

2021 RAEN "Royal St. Robert Cuvee" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

In Honor of their Grandfather Robert Mondavi

97-98 Points - James Suckling:
Extremely spicy with iron, forest flower, black tea, and dried strawberry aromas, following through to a medium to full body, with lovely velvety tannins that are integrated and refined, with a long and flavorful finish. Yet it always remains refined and poised in a exemplary way. Needs three or four years still to show it’s true self. Drink or hold.

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
The medium ruby 2021 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is expressive with layers of spice, wild raspberry, and wild herbs, as well as anise, beetroot, and rhubarb. Medium-bodied, it continues to unfold in the glass, offering fine tannins and fresh, seamless acidity, with notes of cinnamon stick and ripe raspberry. This is a gorgeous wine with a soft mineral texture and a lot of elegance. Drink 2024-2034.

Carlo and Dante Mondavi founded RAEN in the West Sonoma Coast AVA with the goal of seeking California Grand Cru-equivalent sites in the Freestone-Occidental area, and this year saw the promotion of Melanie McIntre from associate winemaker to winemaker. Less than two miles from the ocean, their wines are vibrant expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the vineyard, they practice no-till farming. The 2021 vintage introduces the first vintage of the Chardonnay Lady Marjorie, an homage to their grandmother and intended to be the counterpoint to the Royal St. Robert tribute of Pinot Noir. Seafield is a roughly 4-acre vineyard and is the rockiest site, with an eastern exposure at 1500 feet of elevation. Bodega is surrounded by redwood forest and is the smallest vineyard at just under two acres. Though the Chardonnays are certainly high quality, the Pinot Noirs capture another level of personality and energy that I find quite compelling.

95 Points - Wine Spectator:
Beautifully defined, with pinpoint damson plum, mulberry and blood orange notes stretched out over a frame of rooibos tea and savory accents. Mouthwatering through the lengthy, unadorned finish, which relies on tension and purity. Drink now through 2032. 2,075 cases made.

95 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
Pale to medium ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is bursting with fragrant scents of raspberry, cranberry, rhubarb, orange peel, tea leaves and bitters. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with pure, expressive fruit and a long, floral finish. Juicy and inviting, drink it now for all that floral perfume, or let it develop in bottle over the next 5-7 years. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Winery Notes:
RSR stands for "Royal St. Robert" and the bottling is dedicated to their grandfather Robert, who taught and inspired them. A selection of our coastal vineyard sites, this special cuvée offers a window into the cool, rugged hills of the West Sonoma Coast. The RSR fruit is grown around the village of Freestone out on the true Sonoma Coast. Overlooking Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast line, weather is cool leaving the vines exposed at this site. On summer mornings Pacific fog engulfs the vineyard, covering the fruit with essential ocean mist. The fog recedes back in the late mornings, drenching the vines in afternoon sunlight and warmth. Planted to unique selections, including Calera, Pommard, 828, rVR1 and 667, they all offer layers to the final wine and all express a unique interpretation of this cool site.
