Music Rising Raises $2 Million for Music Relief Funds and will aid Louisiana Musicians and Music Industry Workers
Deadline to apply is Monday, February 28, 2022
Administrative partner, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, is now accepting applications from Louisiana musicians and music industry workers.
NEW ORLEANS (January 25, 2022) — Music Rising, the charitable organization co-founded by U2’s The Edge and producer Bob Ezrin in 2005 after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina has announced an open call for applications to the Music Rising Relief Fund - a statewide relief fund to support Louisiana musicians and music industry workers who have lost income amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort brings Music Rising back to its original mission to support the musical culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. Louisiana’s music community is still struggling to recoup financial losses from 2020 and 2021. In December 2021, Music Rising and Van Eaton Galleries held the Guitar Icons: A Musical Instrument Auction to Benefit Music Rising which raised $2 million dollars for musicians and gig workers in New Orleans and the surrounding regions. Read about the details of the auction here

Music Rising has collaborated with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation who is the administrative partner of Music Rising for this initiative, to distribute funds throughout Louisiana. In March 2020, the Foundation launched the Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund and to date has distributed over $2 million dollars in COVID relief aid to musicians, music industry workers, and culture bearers. All eligible applicants are invited to apply. The grant is open to musicians and music industry workers who currently live and work in Louisiana, depend on events as a substantial part of their income, have lost a significant amount of income due to the ongoing pandemic, have not found supplemental employment, and continue to experience economic hardships.

Music Rising co-founder, Bob Ezrin, said “Louisiana musicians are the custodians of a unique music heritage, passing it down through the generations and influencing so many genres of music we enjoy. We are delighted that the proceeds raised from the Guitar Icons auction held in Los Angeles on December 11, 2021 will aid those who have suffered financially through this pandemic.”

U2’s The Edge, co-founder of Music Rising said “The music of New Orleans has influenced various styles of music borrowed from early traditions. It is the birthplace of jazz and represents a musical culture which bears great significance to most every genre today. If this multigenerational chain is broken, we lose more than just a few concerts. We lose an entire culture that stretches back centuries.”

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Executive Director, Don Marshall, added, "For generations, our music community has contributed to the soul of Louisiana; they enrich our lives immeasurably. We are grateful for our partnership with Music Rising. Their support is a lifeline to musicians and music industry professionals.”

Applications are open now at https://musicrising.com/assistance/. Applicants without access to a computer or internet should call the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Relief Fund Hotline at 504-558-6108 for application assistance.

Qualifying applicants are:

  • Current Louisiana residents
  • 18 years or older
  • Facing financial hardships due to the cancellation of events
  • Musicians and/or music industry gig professionals

Applicants will be notified once grant determinations have been made on or before March 31, 2022.

Applicants must submit the online application by Monday, February 28, 2022 to be considered. Proceeds will be administered by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Approved applicants will be contacted directly by the Foundation.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Awards $1.2 Million in Community Partnership Grants for 2021-2022
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce the 2021-2022 Community Partnership grant recipients, on view now at communitypartnershipgrants.org

Since 1979, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation has invested proceeds from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell directly into the community with grants to fund projects that support the foundation's mission. Over the last ten years, more than $10 million has been awarded in Community Partnership Grants.

Arts education programs (in-school and after-school), presenting organizations, and individual artists with media or documentation projects related to the Foundation's mission have been awarded more than $1.2 million dollars.
"There are so many groups working hard to support the culture of Louisiana, and we are honored to be able to assist them in a direct and meaningful way through our Community Partnership Grants," said Don Marshall, Executive Director of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation. "These are truly your Jazz Fest dollars at work."

For the 2021-2022 grant cycle, grants were awarded in five categories:

  • Jazz & Heritage Presenting grants, awarded to Louisiana-based non-profit arts organizations that present festivals and other cultural events and hire local performers
  • Media & Documentation grants, for artists and others who create new artistic works or otherwise document the local culture
  • Education In-School grants for schools providing music and art classes as part of the school day
  • Education After-School grants for non-profits that present after-school and summer educational programs in the arts
  • Louisiana Cultural Equity Arts grants, awarded to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) creatives and BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations in Louisiana

In total, 93% of the grants were funded.

The applications are reviewed and scored by committees made up of members of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Board of Directors and Advisory Council. The applications are then ranked by score. Those with the highest scores are awarded the largest percentage of the amount they requested.

“The Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum is a small community based one. The continuous support of the Jazz & Heritage Festival Foundation has been immeasurable in the museum’s ability to document, preserve, and present the indigenous cultural expressions of New Orleans to diverse audiences,” said Big Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson, a recipient of a 2021-2022 Community Partnership Grant, “We are most grateful for the funding of projects and programs that serve elders and children. Additionally, the application and reporting process are obviously designed to be inclusive and not burdensome to organizations and individuals who are from and work in communities that birth and nurture the unique cultural expressions that make New Orleans, New Orleans.”

The announcement of the completion for this grant cycle marks two years since the addition of the Foundation’s Louisiana Cultural Equity Arts grant. This grant category is open to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) creatives and BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations in Louisiana. The creation of this grant category is part of a larger effort by the Foundation to address structural and to elevate, amplify, and support the art of BIPOC creatives and communities.

By investing so much into the community, and making a concerted effort to nurture local artists and organizations, the Foundation is creating an environment in which arts and education projects can succeed over the long term, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Complete lists of the 2021-2022 grant recipients in each category are online at communitypartnershipgrants.org

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage & Heritage Foundation is the non-profit that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. The Foundation uses the proceeds from Jazz Fest - and other raised funds - for year-round programs in education, economic development, and cultural enrichment. Day to Day Work of NOLA's Royal Family of Music, the Batistes, Continues Call for Healing Via Music
By: Wright Enterprises, www.wrightnow.biz

NEW ORLEANS - Jan. 2, 2022 - PRLog -- POSTED COURTESY OF WRIGHT ENTERPRISES SAN FRANCISCO~DALLAS COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT~~~
Damon & David Batist Sr_with_Alana_Harris
Navigating the changing dynamics of this pandemic altered world, Damon Batiste continues the drumbeat of the message of the "healing power of music." With his recent December 2021 visit to South Africa in the rearview mirror (his 82nd visit to Africa) and a vision to return as early as March of 2022, Batiste continues his clarion call to engage arts and culture trade for the purposes of commerce and healing of hearts.

Last January (https://www.prlog.org/12854159) Batiste and his father David Batiste, who is in the Louisiana Hall of Fame, joined with legendary Beale Street businessman and visionary, Tommy Peters to start on their trajectory to bring on the healing via music. Unfortunately, Peters passed away in September (https://www.prlog.org/12884984) after battling COVID-19, yet the importance of his message of music being important to both commerce and the spirit continues.

"I think our January 1, 2021 response to 2020 is even more significant and important as we have seen the loss of too many musicians, artists and just everyday people in our nation and the world," said Damon Batiste, Cultural Ambassador and Founder of NOSACONN Inc. "Tommy's passing along with so many here at home and abroad broke our hearts; but we are inspired by their lives to do the best we can moving forward."

As proclaimed at the beginning of 2021, the healing power of music had its impact. One indicator is to look at the music produced by New Orleans Royal Family of Music and the Grammy competition. There were a number of Batistes that were in consideration for Grammy Awards and drumroll please, Batiste's first cousin, 2021 Academy Award Oscar winner Jon Batiste is up for 11 Grammy Awards (64th Annual Grammy Awards, January 31, 2022 hosted by South African Comedian Trevor Noah in Los Angeles). "We are so proud of Jon," said David Batiste, uncle of the Late Night with Stephen Colbert, music director. "Every weeknight we see New Orleans and our family represented, bringing healing to the world one note at a time. It's great to see Jon lift up one of my signature instruments, the melodica carrying on the family's traditions."

"We proud of New Orleans' musicians, period," added the younger Batiste. As New Orleans was well represented in the consideration of Grammy Awards New Orleans has such a strong tradition starting with Congo Square to Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson to the Nevilles, the Marsalis' and other great talents. NOSACONN is working to make sure that the worldwide impact that started with the sound of New Orleans' call and response sound that echoes around the world continues its reverberation," added Damon.

Affirmation of the Batistes' collaborations and community work came as Eric Cager at the 29th Annual Cutting Edge Music Business Conference presented David Batiste and Damon Batiste with the 2021 Music Influencer of the Year Award.

Working on upcoming projects between the City of New Orleans and Senegal; commerce based cultural exchange between New Orleans and Durban; Batiste, who was not hindered by the news of the Omicron variant attended the 18th Annual KCAP KwaZulu Natal African Film Festival in December 2021 (https://www.prlog.org/12896341) as a catalyst point for new work in Mozambique and Senegal along with South Africa.

One added note, Batiste arranged the screening of the independent feature documentary "The Opera Game," at KCAP KAFF. "The Opera Game" director Monty Ross and producers, medical doctors Ken Mask and Greg Ward were part of a virtual Q&A with the youthful audience, who found the film fascinating. "The Opera Game," a historical feature film, examines the night of Paul Morphy's untimely and mysterious death in post-Civil War New Orleans. The savant genius and world chess champion's exciting and dynamic life is reviewed.

"The healing power of music" will not only generate fun but also purpose with weekly social entertainment events at JAS Venue to create local economic development as one example. "The JAS Venue and Damon Batiste have Joined forces to bring some of the most entertaining musicians as well as a professional sociable Venue to the city of New Orleans," said Reanee Dupree, owner of JAS Venue.

Other upcoming events include NOSACONN supported artists such as Joanna Hale-McGill, who reveals her new music video "Revelation 21:4" on January 22, plus collaborations like the NOLA Global Week, March 21-27, 2022 (www.nolagyf.com).

Three Arizona Mayors coming together to celebrate UNESCO's International Jazz Day at Scottsdale Jazz Festival

International Jazz Day Arizona_round_seal
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Mayor David Ortega of Scottsdale, Mayor Corey D. Woods of Tempe, and Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner of Paradise Valley have all united for the upcoming Scottsdale Jazz Festival 2022. The Arizona State legislature introduced a bill by representatives Bolding, Powers Hannley, and Rodriguez which would recognize April 30th as International Jazz Day, and proclaimed April as Jazz appreciation month in the state of Arizona. This yearly tradition honors the legendary work of Herbie Hancock and many other great Jazz musicians. The new law emphasizes that the Smithsonian Institution created Jazz Appreciation Month in 2011 as an opportunity for people to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz music for the entire month of April.

In 2013, William “Doc” Jones created the International Jazz Day AZ Festival and would go on to create the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation, which has been a 501-C3 nonprofit organization, since, 2015. Doc Jones has stated that the mission of Jazz Day AZ is to produce concerts and events that would bring attention to tourism in the state of Arizona and bring attention to the importance of arts in education. Funds from the event have gone on to sponsor smaller organizations like NextStudent Academy, Academy of Excellence, and the Onyx Summer music program. Due to the pandemic, they have added on the mission to build affordable housing for creative artists.

The mission of promoting tourism in the great state of Arizona has been on the minds of Mayors Ortega, Woods, and Bien-Wilner. In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic caused that year’s Jazz Day event to be held virtually. The following year, on April 30th, 2021 the event was also streamed live across the world, and hosted by actor Michael Douglas. This was an exciting year, as the festival celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and included amazing performances from Herbie Hancock, as well as Marcus Miller, Andra Day, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John McLaughlin, Dianne Reeves, and Joe Lovano. Preparations have started on 2022’s Jazz Day AZ, held at The Scottsdale Center For the Arts on April 30th, from 1-9 pm. It will be nearly two years since the pandemic has been upon us, and the spread of vaccinations has made it an extremely promising and exciting time to begin the planning process in hope of yet again, a successful event.

The promise of 2022’s Jazz Day AZ has begun and has prompted these three incredible Mayor’s to form the International Jazz Day coalition. They’ve chosen to come together and see to it that this year’s festival not only happens but may very well be Arizona’s best Jazz Festival yet. They understand the importance Jazz Day has meant to not only their great state but to the hundreds of other countries and states that come together and celebrate the important history of Jazz. It’s a well-known fact that jazz music may have started in America, however, it has grown and influenced the world. Jazz is more than just music, it’s also an international art form. It celebrates diversity, human rights, and promotes peace while connecting different cultures. Jazz music has always promoted freedom of expression, which is a powerful message to be teaching the next generation. The international Jazz festival is not only there for fans of jazz, but also for the next generation that may be feeling lost or misunderstood. Giving them a sense of hope, identity, and tribe.

While the Jazz Day AZ is held each year on April 30th, the whole month of April is Jazz appreciation month in Arizona. This means that the state of Arizona is not only open for celebrations for one day, it’s open all month to come together and celebrate. The three mayors of the cities of Tempe, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale (which holds the festival) know this and have formed their own International Jazz Day Coalition. Their mission is to extend tourism in their state of Arizona not just for one day, but for the whole month of April. The upcoming event will mark the 11th year of Jazz Day AZ, and is the perfect time to promote tourism, seeing that Super Bowl LVII will be held on February 5, 2023, at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. It’s an honor for the state of Arizona to hold 2023’s Superbowl and a reason that the Mayor’s Coalition is working hard to come together to promote their respective cities and state.

They are not only working together but also are receiving help from city managers, the Arizona Office of Tourism, and citizens. They are developing an agenda and creating a plan of action to benefit from the success of Jazz Day, which will not only see tourism for that day but extend it as long as possible. The hope is to overcome the devastating effects that COVID-19 has dealt Arizona, and be able to get tourism in the state back to where it once was. The Coalition will utilize a wide range of methods, from establishing task forces to drafting legislation to pass a bill that declares April 30th a non-official holiday. After all, it was a simple bill, HCR 2017, that was drafted and passed, declaring the whole month of April in Arizona to become Jazz Appreciation Month. Utilizing the whole month of April for celebrations can be a great way to expand tourism in Arizona, and move past the effects of COVID-19.
