Postsecondary Counseling Newsletter

November 6th, 2024

Dear 9th Graders and Families,

Happy Fall!...or is it winter? I hope the snow this morning brought joy to your household as it did to mine.

So far this semester, 9th graders have been learning about the cycle of socialization in Humanities. Last week, Elliot and I worked with 9th graders to begin to examine what they currently know about jobs and careers and how they came to know those things in the context of the socialization unit. A key wondering that we are presenting to the students is "How is our knowledge of jobs and careers socialized into us, and how can we expand out knowledge beyond what we currently know?" We will continue this work next week during college and career prep time in Humanities as we prepare for our Career Site Visit field trips.

Career Site visit Field Trips: Wednesday, December 4th

All 9th grade students will be visiting workplaces in the region. This will take the place of core classes that day, and students who are absent will be marked absent from their core classes.

The purpose of the career site visits is to learn about the following:

-What types of jobs exist?

-What do people do at work?

-What education and training is needed to do certain jobs?

-How do my interests and aptitudes line up with the jobs I am learning about?

COAHEC H.O.P.E. Program

COAHEC H.O.P.E. Program is one of two parts of COAHEC H.O.P.E. High school students engage in a series of live, monthly virtual sessions with like-minded individuals with shared interests and goals in health careers. Typically, these sessions occur during the high school academic year.

During a session, students learn from educational presentations, activities, and discussions highlighting health issues and related careers. Activities will provide hands-on opportunities to understand how healthcare professionals use their skills and knowledge to increase community wellness. Discussions will introduce students to students in different regions, facilitating a cohort of like-minded individuals with shared interests and goals.
