9th Sunday after Pentecost
The Arkive: Ark and Dove's Newsletter
All are invited to celebrate the 9th Sunday after Pentecost, at both the 9:30 am (choir led) and 11:00 am (band led) worship services!
Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

The main street off my immediate neighborhood is a raceway; cars very rarely stop for pedestrians about to traverse the crosswalk. The perpendicular state highway is always under construction and new buildings continue to rise up close to the road. That highway links to another, backed up bumper to bumper for the daily commute. And off that, roads increasingly lined with commercial developments. Busy and bustling, all of it.

If you make your way on all these roadways, as I did this last Monday afternoon, you can find yourself at the Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract. Pat Devers, one of our members, introduced me to this place only 10 minutes away from my door. It has been a gift. On a Monday afternoon, my Sabbath, the refuge is a quiet oasis in the middle of madness. I parked my car at the visitors center and took off running the trails. Miles into dense woods I came upon a clearing, a pond, and a view of green hills. It was so beautiful and silent that I was moved to prayer.

Summer, supposedly, is a season for getaways and relaxation. That is what I found somewhere in the middle of the Patuxent Research Refuge. Maybe summer can also be a season to get away, if even for an hour, and pray, contemplate, collect thoughts. For those of us living near the church, we live in increasingly hectic, congested territory. We exist in a culture that encourages busyness. And we abide in a country in turmoil, if not crisis. We cannot disengage entirely; the world needs caregivers and peacemakers. Still, we can and must find a little refuge to pray.

Verse and Prayer

...learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan,
plead for the widow.
-Isaiah 1:17
Gracious God: we want you to do as we wish. Humbly we admit that what we want is not always what is best. We come to you that you might reorient our desires to your will. Transform our hearts and minds to that of your Son Jesus Christ, who lived your way in our world. Teach us what is good. Renew our sense of justice. Embolden us to rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, and plead for the widow. Amen.
As we focus on worship this week, the music asks questions of the listener and offers invitation to the community of Christ. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about the Adult Choir Kick-off in September, resumption of children's music activities, the return of Ark& Dove's instrumental chamber ensemble, and other opportunities to serve with music!

Children's Music Ministry Survey As we seek to do a little reorganization of the children's music ministry, Ark & Dove would like some input going forward with solutions that might work for different families. If you have school-aged children, you are invited and encouraged to take the survey! Thank you!
There is still a call to help build our audio group for the band led service. A regular rotating schedule will begin this September with the start of the new school year. Please keep an ear out for a class that I am going to offer this August for those interested in learning how to work the audio board so that any volunteers feel comfortable to assist the band during service.

God bless,

Director of Contemporary Music

Anne Arundel County Back to School Program Update
On July 28 we began this year's Back to School partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Department of Social Services. Social Services matched Ark & Dove with 35 students at Ridgeway Elementary School, and thanks to your generosity we have already signed up sponsors for all of the students. If you wanted to sign up but didn't have a chance, consider contacting the Back to School program at 410-269-4462 or 410-269-4461. Or, you can be a big help to Meade Middle School students by donating loose supplies at church. We have a list in the church lobby of the most-needed items. The mission ministry will deliver the supplies, or you can take them straight to the school. For questions contact Greg Makar (301-483-8255, GLMakar@juno.com).
CANNED BEANS (garbanzo beans, black beans, refried beans, etc.). Please drop off food items in the Mission Zone bin.  Thank you for your donations
Air Mattresses
If you were kind enough to lend an air mattress to host our friends in June (1st Presbyterian Church of Salem, NJ, who were on their way to Puerto Rico for disaster relief) please be sure you’ve picked yours up. Currently there are air mattresses in the Calvin room waiting to be reunited with their owners. We are now preparing the classrooms for the 2019-2020 school year, and if you choose not to pick up your air mattress, by August 18, we will be happy to donate them for you. Thank you again for your help in hosting! Cheryl Schafer Mission Elder, csscas@verizon .net

Youth Sunday School 2019-2020
We are getting excited for Sunday School, for pre-K through high school students, to start again this fall (September 8!), and we are in need of your help. There are opportunities for members of the congregation to get involved at all age levels. However, we are in particular need of teachers and helpers for pre-K (3-5 year olds) and Godly Play (kindergarten through 5th grades). As part of our child protection policy, all adults who participate in Sunday School need to complete a background check (paid for by the church). If you are interested in helping with Sunday school weekly, once a month, or as a substitute, please contact Julie Devers at jbdevers@gmail.com.

Friendly Seniors Cruising!
Here we are--seniors all! We brought our own sandwiches and water and the Areys plied us with chips and fruit salad. Nothing like an afternoon on the water. Unfortunately, the wind didn't cooperate, so we were under motor power most of the time. As it hummed, we talked and got to know each other better. When we had a breeze and could sail, suddenly we enjoyed the quiet with silence... and just being.... Remembering helps my daily meditation. The reprise in September (no date yet) has shown great interest, so if you're interested, make sure you get your name on Joan Berry's List!! (410-672-5237 or berry962@verizon.net) First come, first on board.
