October 2023

Have a happy Halloween!

Photo of the Month

Fall has arrived, and with it came some recent rain that gave way to a gorgeous rainbow over the farm. It was a stunner, and we rushed to snap photos from every corner of the property.

You're probably wondering, though โ€” did the cows marvel at the magnificence overhead? Were they awed by Mother Nature's majestic display?

Not likely. Cows don't see the world like people do. Cattle and other grazing animals can see color but lack the full spectrum of vision possessed by humans. That's because cows have just two color receptors. This is known as dichromatism. They best perceive yellowish-green and bluish-purple hues. And they do not see red, no matter what you've learned from your favorite matador.

They are, however, more sensitive to contrasts between light and dark colors, notes animal scientist Temple Grandin, who is widely considered the world's leading expert on livestock behavior.

So the next time you see a glorious rainbow, stand in awe for yourself AND on behalf of our cows. They'll repay the favor with milk, butter, cheese curds and ice cream.

Farm breakfast a success

More than 500 people from all over the state (and country!) experienced the wonder of a working dairy farm during our Down on the Farm Breakfast on Sept. 23.

The annual event is part of our commitment to celebrating local food and educating people about where their food comes from.

Guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast and toured the farm. There, they met cows and learned how we care for them. They also got to pet calves and played dairy-themed games.

The menu included goods from 10 local food suppliers โ€” milk, chocolate milk, heavy cream and butter from Hansen's Dairy, Hudson; bread from Mersim's Grocery, Waterloo; eggs from Groothuis Farm, Nashua; Great River Maple Syrup, Garnavillo; Country View Dairy Yogurt, Hawkeye; O'Brien's Own Granola, Center Point; Edgewood Locker Pork Sausage Links, Edgewood; apples from Apples on the Avenue, Nashua; Sidecar Coffee, Waterloo; and apple cider from Wilson's Orchard, Iowa City.

See a gallery of photos from the event on our Facebook post.

Tour season ends Oct. 31

Summer seemed to fly by in the blink of an eye this year! It's hard to believe tour season is already winding down.

But it's not over 'til it's over. Which is Oct. 31. You've got the entire month of October to book a tour if you still want to see the farm before season's end.

There are still calves to bottle feed, cows to milk and kangaroos to pet.

Don't miss out! Book your tour at hansendairy.com/tours.

Apple season is here!

Apple is the flavor of autumn!

If you can't make it to an orchard this year โ€” and even if you can โ€” come see us at our Cedar Falls and Waterloo stores to satisfy your cravings for a crisp, crunchy apple or the warm spice of apple cider.

We've got Wilson's Orchard & Farm Apple Cider by the gallon or half-gallon, and Sparkling Apple Cider in single-serve cans. Made in Iowa City, these ciders are perfect for any fall gathering.

Need some sweet crunch? Pick up Iowa-grown apples from Beck Orchard, Timeless Prairie Orchard and Mayberry Farm. For a sweet treat, try some Clear Creek Orchard Apple Cinnamon Jam!

Meet the Moo Crew

This month's edition of Meet the Moo Crew features farmhand extraordinaire Bri Snyder.

Bri has worked at our farm for 4 years milking cows, cleaning pens, doing field work and whatever else each day calls for.

She's sweet as pie and tough as nails, and the cows love her as much as we do!

See more about Bri in this video.

Customer of the Month

Beth Barber and her family were introduced to Hansen's Dairy milk during the Hudson Days town festival a number of years ago. She was hooked!

"As a dietitian, I love the farm-to-table concept," Beth says. "I love how it's a family-owned farm. They are an incredibly hard-working, friendly family, and I love supporting their business."

The Barbers have had a front row seat to the farm during several hands-on tours over the years. When her kids were small, they loved bottle feeding the calves. Beth loved milking the cows and making butter.

"Every time family and friends come to Hudson for the first time I take them to Hansenโ€™s Dairy. Thereโ€™s nothing like it," she says.

Thanks, Beth! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $40 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook, Instagram and X pages.

Cow of the Month

Our October Cow of the Month could be considered royalty.

Sweety is the daughter of Elevation, the reigning Holstein Bull of the Century.

The late Elevation, born in 1965, was posthumously bestowed the honor in 1999 by Holstein International. Still today, his rare combination of superior production, conformation and longevity is prized by dairy farmers worldwide.

Elevation's legen-dairy status and genetic blueprint will likely live in perpetuity. His record stands with more than 100,000 recorded offspring -- including Sweety -- and more than 8.8 million descendants worldwide.

Our Sweety girl is living proof of her dad's superior genetic credentials. She's a healthy, hearty cow and her sweet disposition definitely lives up to her name. All hail Queen Sweety!
