The lazy days of summer are more behind us than in front of us. Across the country, children are heading back to school, vacations are winding down, and before long, September will be in full swing, and we'll find ourselves looking ahead to the hustle of the holidays.
So, before we get there, I’d like to offer you a simple 'summer’s end' challenge: take a little time to read something that could renew the way you think about stewardship, discipleship, and the Christian life.
Recently, we were blessed to sponsor and speak at the Parish Engagement Conference in Houston, Texas. While I was unable to attend, members of our team manned our booth, met hundreds of people, and presented a session entitled “Another Look at the US Bishops’ Pastoral Letter, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response.”
It got me thinking: When was the last time I read this document? Maybe it’s time for me to take another look, too?
How about you? Have you read the U.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Stewardship recently?
I remember when the document was new. Our own Bishop John R. McGann of the Diocese of Rockville Centre was instrumental in its development as a member of the ad hoc committee that put it forth. More than 30 years later, the wisdom of those who helped shape this document continues to guide us, to speak to us, to inspire us.
Their words and their intent remain remarkably relevant today.
Of course, Sacred Scripture is the ultimate source of who we are and how we are called to live as Christians. But the Bishops so beautifully draw from Scripture, offer explanations, make connections, and help us see the profound impact that a life of stewardship can have - not only on our parishes, schools, dioceses, and communities, but on our own relationship with Christ.
So, here is our challenge: Before the summer comes to an end, give it a read!
Whether this is your first time opening the document or one of many, approach it with fresh eyes. What does it say to you now? What challenges you? What resonates differently today than it did the last time you read it?
