Dear Friend,
What is something that brought you joy this year?
The moments that brought a smile to my face were often the simple ones with those I love, finding connection through shared activities, a family video call, a walk on the beach, or a new favorite author. I'm guessing that some of your moments of joy were similar.
Our library has created so many connections for people and brought so much joy, even through a difficult year. As a mother of teenagers wrote, “We love coming by the library, even if we can't come in. Thank you for all you're doing to help us all stay connected. The library is a bright spot in a weird year!”
Thanks to your support, the Monterey Public Library has helped parents connect with their children through tens of thousands of youth books borrowed; it has helped adults stay engaged and learning with virtual programs; it has helped homebound residents connect with a warm and welcoming librarian over the phone; it has helped researchers find images and information on Monterey’s rich history.
Libraries are essential to thriving communities. During a year like 2020, the need for library services has been greater than ever as residents rely on critical resources—virtually—to learn, work, seek employment, and connect to others. As deep budget reductions continue into 2021, your support is more vital than ever to ensure our library has the resources it needs to help our community build resilience, continue to learn and grow and find moments of joy.
If you have the means and haven’t had a chance to donate yet, please consider giving to the MPL Friends & Foundation at Monterey County Gives! The campaign ends tomorrow at midnight. Gifts of all sizes make a difference in keeping our community and library strong!
Gratefully,
Inga Waite
Library & Museums Director
