Researching the women in our family can be problematic. Our female ancestors left very few records making it challenging to determine a maiden name or family of origin. This program presented by Laura Cubbage-Draper will cover strategies and record groups that can advance your research and help to uncover female ancestors as well as learn more about their lives.

Laura Cubbage-Draper has been engaged in genealogical research for over 20 years. A New Jersey native with deep Pennsylvania and German roots, she is a genealogical researcher, presenter, and volunteer. What began as an interest in her own family history, grew into research projects for friends and a local historical society.

Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween, dress up in costumes, or decorate our homes with skeletons and ghosts?

Join author and photographer Kevin Woyce for a colorful presentation which traces the strange history of Halloween, from Old World harvest festivals to our modern family holiday. Along the way, I'll discuss the origins of the Jack-o'lantern, Orson Welles' 1938 "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, the first monster movies, famous costume makers, and much more. The hour-long slideshow is illustrated with original photographs and antique Halloween cards, advertisements, artwork, and movie posters.

October Book Boxes!

Book Boxes allow you the chance to read a library book you may not have picked yourself. For each month our librarians have selected a theme and will put books across all genres into these boxes that follow our theme. Participants will still need to check out the book like they would any other library materials and loan periods still apply. No registration is required, first come first served.

This month's book boxes feature books feature spooky stories of all kind!
This program presented by the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts explores the history of a variety of different candies, including some that have been around for well over 100 years and some that are quite new. The program is conducted alphabetically, discussing a different “sweet” for each letter of the alphabet, but addresses broader themes, including when and why consumption of candy in the United States increased.
