The year was 1974. The place was Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Debora Leah delivered a healthy baby boy, and she and her husband, Pinhas Gabay, knew their family was complete. Refugees from Tangier, Morocco, they viewed life through a lens of gratitude and “Baruch Hashem.”

Second star to the left and across the sea was a visionary, Rabbi Daniel Rosenthal in pine scented Seattle, Washington. The country was sipping on Tab, treading 11% inflation and watching Happy Days. Rabbi Rosenthal recognized the community needed a yeshiva high school and through his mesirus nefesh (personal sacrifice), he founded Yeshivat Ohr Hazafon. Literally, the Light of the North.

Today, fifty years later, we reflect on the endurance of the yeshiva, now called Northwest Yeshiva High School, and under the stewardship of a new Head of School, Rabbi Yehuda Gabay.

Jewish values instruct us to provide education for the next generation. But schools are never easy to launch or maintain. NYHS has been through a lot, but it’s always been there, a bedrock institution for Torah learning for Jewish students in this corner of the country.

In our Jubilee year, we are looking forward to continued growth, academic striving and fostering ayin tovah, a good eye. With big ideas and a vibrant student body, we are truly manifesting being the “Light of the Northwest.”

We invite you to join us throughout the year to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Below you will find dates to look forward to gathering, celebrating and supporting NYHS.

In the meantime, we leave you with this fun 50th birthday message from the NYHS Board of Directors to Rabbi Gabay. Hear us roar with pride.
