Vin Chicago Culinary Connection - Meal #5

"Farm-to-Table in Highland Park"
A Dinner for Two from Abigail's American Bistro

Times are tough for restaurants. The Vin Chicago Culinary Connection is our way of helping out. Each week, we will ask the proprietors of one of our favorite spots to craft a special take-out meal. We'll then offer you the opportunity to sign up for this meal, with 100% of the proceeds going to the restaurant.

For the restaurants, this program will help them keep their kitchen busy and their staff employed. For you, we hope these dinners will substitute for a night out at your favorite hot spot. Set the table, light some candles, pop a good bottle of wine and enjoy a special evening!

Today we partner with  Chef  Michael Paulsen , proprietor of Abigail's American Bistro at 493 Roger Williams Avenue in Highland Park. One of our favorite restaurants on the North Shore, Abigail's offers a true farm-to-table experience, with quality and elegance that equal what you'll find in the hippest, most food-centric neighborhood in the city.

Chef Paulsen has created three special dinners you can  order for pick-up this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Each meal includes a salad, an appetizer and two (2) portions of the main course. As is tradition at Abigail's, each meal also comes with their signature Cheddar-Scallion Biscuits and a selection of Housemade Mini Cookies.

2018 Susana Balbo  "Crios" Malbec
Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A perfect combination of fun and serious, the 2018 Crios is exactly why people love Argentinian Malbec, and it is a ridiculous value.
Susana Balbo, crafts this deliciously juicy red from extremely high elevation vineyards in the Andes Mountains. Think your favorite Mount Veeder winery offers high-altitude mountain fruit? The vines for the Crios Malbec grow at an average altitude that is 1000 feet above the peak of Mount Veeder!
Perfect on its own or with burgers, tuna or a heaping plate of grilled veggies, it offers subtle and complex flavors of blueberry, raspberry, plum and dusty cocoa effortlessly intertwined with leather, fresh ground black pepper, sweet tobacco and crushed gravel. The finish is clean and fresh with perfectly integrated oak notes.
Awarding scores of 91 and 92 points, Wine Advocate and James Suckling write these impressive reviews...
"The spectacular 2018 Críos Malbec is aromatic, floral and expressive, varietal and clean, with structure and fine tannins, with nice balance. It's velvety and juicy, with very focused flavors and a long finish. It's among the best Críos I remember. Great value too. Drink Date: 2019 - 2021."
- 91 Points, Wine Advocate (10/31/2019)
"This shows the beautiful quality of the 2018 vintage with a solid core of fruit, bright acidity and a silky finish. All here. Drink now."
- 92 Points, James Suckling (3/27/2019)
Wine Advocate quotes a release price of $15. Today's special Vin Chicago price beats all 60 online listings. This is a whole lot of wine for under ten bucks!
This "Sold-Out" 92-Point, $12.99 French White is Back!
2018 Domaine de la Petite Roche  "La Petite Roche" Chenin Blanc
Anjou, Loire Valley, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we featured this intensely mineral-driven, dense and rich,  Loire Valley Chenin Blanc in early March, it sold out in a flash. We immediately went to work on getting a second shipment, and it is now here. If you missed it the first time around (or if you already drank through your supply) now's your chance to load up!

With just a few swirls in the glass, t he  2018 "La Petite Roche" opens up to showcase notes of honey, ripe nectarine, crisp red apple, ripe yellow apple, pear, white stones, chalk, spring flowers and a hint of anise. Fresh yet creamy, it finishes with extraordinary chalk and mineral flavors that are balanced by a surprisingly plush and viscous mouthfeel. Long and electric, it gets even better with more air.

We give it a resounding 92 points. Given that our sample bottle drank well for a full week, without a hint of oxidation, we expect that this beauty has a good 5 to 7 years of life ahead of it.

Median online retail is $17. Our "beats-all" price smashes that. If you love serious mineral-driven whites, this one is a no brainer.
