Deputy Fire Chief to Take State's Top Fire Marshal Post

The state of Michigan recognized a standout in Northville Township Friday. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointed Deputy Fire Chief Tom Hughes (pictured left) as Michigan’s Fire Marshal.

Deputy Chief Hughes, a Northville Township native who spent his entire nearly 21-year career with the Northville Township Fire Department, will retire from the Department May 23 to accept the prestigious role.

While he begins his new job June 2, Northville Township Fire Training Coordinator Jesse Marcotte (pictured right), who was promoted, will step into the Deputy Fire Chief role May 24 to ensure the Department’s continuity.

First Tours, First Smiles

The Northville Township Police Department (NTPD) recently had some special visitors at our Essential Services Complex — Daisy Troop 40020! It was NTPD's first official tour in the new building, and they couldn't have asked for a better group to kick things off.

The troop was working on their “Friendly and Helpful” badge, and we were happy to help bring that lesson to life. Max, our beloved support dog, definitely stole the show — the girls loved getting to meet him, giving him treats, and learning about his important work.

We're grateful for the chance to connect with these bright young community members and show them what it means to serve and protect.

Welcome Aboard, Elliot!

The Department of Public Services extends a warm welcome to Elliot Forde, the newest member of the Public Works team as a Utility Maintenance Worker I.

He will assist with public works construction and maintenance work involving different types of tools, light equipment and special power-driven equipment.

He previously worked for Lily Ann Cabinets in Adrian, where he was a replacements specialist. He had his hand in everything, from order picking to parts distribution.

“I’m looking forward to learning here,” he said. “I am a fish out of water as I begin this new role.”

Fishing, in fact, is one of Elliot’s passions. He prefers ice fishing over traditional fishing because it was his first exposure to angling. It’s also how he caught his biggest one – a 10-inch perch. Houghton Lake is his favorite place to drop a line.

Elliot also enjoys kayaking, hitting the arcade to enjoy Street Fighter III-3rd Strike and playing such video games as Mario Kart (The main character he selects is the turtle-like Koopa Troopa.), Marvel Rivals and Call of Duty.

One of the most impactful experiences of his life was in high school, when he traveled to Tokyo, Japan, with his grandmother, who was there for work.

“It was so compact and so quiet,” despite being a big city, he said.

It fueled his desire to travel more. His dream destinations include London, Ireland, Amsterdam and to return to Japan.

For now, he’s excited to travel around Northville Township learning the community.

Help Fill Hearts and Hands with Hope

Our NTFD is co-hosting their first-ever toy drive in honor of 7-year-old cancer warrior Emilia Pigeon. Her birthday wish? To collect toys for kids at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Drop off new, unopened, unwrapped toys at our Public Safety Headquarters (40911 Seven Mile Road) now through May 5.

Let’s rally around Emilia and spread some joy to kids who need it most.

Recycling Right Makes a Big Difference

Here are some important reminders from DPW about what to toss in your recycling tote—and what to leave out.

DO PLACE THESE ITEMS IN THE TOTE

You can include paper products like newspapers, office paper, magazines, junk mail, clean pizza boxes, and flattened cardboard or paperboard boxes. Plastic items such as bottles, jugs, and tubs (like water bottles, milk jugs, detergent containers, yogurt and butter tubs) are accepted as long as they’re rinsed and have their caps or lids on. Metals like empty pots, pans, and aluminum, steel, or tin cans are also good to go. For consumer packaging, rinse and recycle things like egg cartons, broth containers, coffee cups, and milk cartons. Clean glass bottles and jars—clear or colored—can also be recycled with the lids left on. Please remember: electronics and e-waste are not accepted.

DO NOT PLACE THESE ITEMS IN THE TOTE

Avoid tossing in pill bottles, grease-stained pizza boxes, or any food-soiled items. Non-recyclable plastics like saran wrap, waxed cardboard, glittery tissue paper, and Styrofoam are also not accepted. Please keep out electronic waste, chemical or motor oil containers, shredded paper, and plastic bags. Organic waste, scrap metal, batteries, ceramics, glassware, and fluorescent lights should never go in your curbside tote.

If you're unsure whether an item is recyclable, it’s safer to throw it away. Non-recyclable materials can damage equipment and slow down the recycling process.

COMPOST

Compost should go in a brown bag or a clearly marked container (35 gallons or less). Acceptable items include leaves, twigs, branches, grass clippings, and plants. Please avoid food or animal waste to help prevent pests and odors.

For more disposal and recycling options, visit: https://ntwp.org/recyclesearch.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Northville Township clean and green.
