Friends and Supporters,

Happy New Year!

First, thank you to all of our generous supporters who have donated over the past year. You make our work possible and we couldn’t advocate for a more sustainable future without you.

We raised nearly $4000 in our end-of-year fundraising campaign as part of our efforts to match the generous $50,000 grant we received from the Brunkhorst Foundation. Your donations are key to enabling PSG to have one full-time, and one part-time staff to track, report, and mobilize the public on key land use, housing, and transportation issues. You can see that we have a ways to go! So, if you haven’t yet donated to PSG, you can donate here. Thank you!

We'd also like to take a moment to thank one of our founding members, Martha Wingfield, for over 20 years of service with PSG! Martha has retired from the PSG Board and we appreciate her years of dedication and support for PSG and smart growth in the region.

2023 is already heating up, here are some of the issues that have our attention as we start the year:

Arcadia Development Rezoning

In Henrico County, local residents are opposing a large-scale suburban development on prime, productive agricultural land in Varina. This development could set a precedent for significant development throughout rural eastern Henrico. We believe it is premature given the county’s comprehensive plan update is in progress and the Route 5 Corridor Coalition has long called for a detailed small area plan for the Varina area.

City Center and Diamond District

The City of Richmond is in the process of revitalizing these two significant areas for the City. They’ve selected a developer for the Diamond District and are proposing some zoning changes. The city has also received initial concepts from developer teams for the second part of City Center redevelopment. We are pushing for more affordable housing and for the public to have an opportunity to participate in and have a say in these city solicitations.

Hanover and Henrico Comprehensive Plan Updates

Comprehensive plans help guide development in the future, making these important to how the counties will grow. Revitalizing older communities with walkable, mixed-use, transit-oriented communities, increasing transit and pedestrian/cyclist options, preserving farms and forests, and affordable housing strategies will be key to a more sustainable future for these communities.

Transit Funding and Plans

We will be supporting increased transit funding in local budgets, advancing the N-S bus rapid transit corridor and West Broad extension, more frequent service throughout the network, better bus stops and safer walk and bike access to stops.

Today, 1/10 at 5:30 pm, PlanRVA will hold a virtual meeting to discuss the results of the West Broad Street study. You can register for the meeting here.

Safer Arterial Roads

A core part of the PSG vision is the revitalization of older commercial corridors. The arterial roads that are the spines of these corridors are the best locations for dedicated bus lanes, and also need to be redesigned to be safer for all users – especially people walking, biking, and taking transit.

Affordable Housing Tools

We will be pressing for increased funding for local housing trust funds, for including affordable housing in new developments, for strategies to preserve existing affordable housing, and for the wise use of public land to provide more affordable housing.

Make sure you are subscribed to PSG’s email list for updates on opportunities to participate in shaping your community’s future, and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more live updates as they happen!

Sincerely,

Partnership for Smarter Growth
