A Brand-New Series for Arc Parents

Feeling overwhelmed or confused by special education? Join our Parent Empowerment Series!

The Arc-JCC&GC is excited to be launching this free, 5-session series for parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) on an IEP! Beginning February 20, this new program is the first outcome of our previous research in the community and your feedback on the needs of parents with school-aged children. It will be an invaluable opportunity for parents in our community to gain the knowledge and advocacy skills they need to enhance their child’s success at school.

The Arc's Child and Family advocates will lead classes and discussions based on the acclaimed book From Emotions to Advocacy: The Special Education Survival Guide, by Pam Wright and Pete Wright. Our collaborative study of this comprehensive and easy-to-read book will help parents plan, prepare, and get organized to advocate for their children’s educational needs.

This series is for you if:

  • You are a parent with a child aged 5-12 years on an IEP, you have attended at least one IEP meeting, and you reside in Jefferson, Gilpin, or Clear Creek Counties.
  • You want to become more involved in your child’s educational success.

For full information about the Parent Empowerment Series: Special Education, click here.

All materials will be provided, including your choice of a hard-copy book or an electronic version. All sessions are Thursday evenings, including two in-person sessions and three that will be held over Zoom.

Studying Up on Fire Safety at People First!

This month’s People First meeting was a fantastic opportunity for attendees to learn more about fire safety, directly from West Metro Fire Rescue!

People First is a monthly meeting of self-advocates that convenes at The Arc’s office, with the goal that members will support each other in further developing their self-advocacy skills. This year, the group has begun an effort to hold several practical trainings during their meetings. The first training, a fire safety training, took place at the January 8 meeting.

Members of the group brainstormed the topic for the training, and People First president Molly Kirkham contacted West Metro Fire to organize the presentation.

About 10 individuals attended the training, where presenters from West Metro Fire covered “fall prevention, fire safety, and the most common types of fires—cooking, bad electrical cords,” explained Jessica Shouse, The Arc’s Director of Teen & Young Adult Advocacy.

Members also could choose to participate in a fire simulation in which they used a demo fire extinguisher to put out a virtual fire. Additionally, West Metro Fire left resources and information for attendees to take home.

“The members asked lots of really good questions,” Jessica said. “We all learned from the presentation.”

In the future, the group plans to host additional trainings on other topics. Stay tuned!

Want to join People First? Swing by one of the group’s monthly meetings! People First meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30pm-6:30pm, with the next meeting scheduled for February 5. Meetings take place at The Arc’s office, 13949 W. Colfax Ave., Suite 102, Lakewood, CO 80401. Learn more about People First here.

Check Out a Dynamic Show from

Artists with Disabilities!

An exciting exhibit is taking place now at Denver’s Access Gallery!

Access Gallery is a nonprofit gallery and studio program dedicated to featuring and selling work from artists with disabilities. Its current exhibit, “All Access Pass,” includes pieces from about 40 of the roughly 45 artists the gallery supports. What’s special about this exhibit is that each participating artist had the opportunity to pick which piece they wanted to show—leading to a unique and versatile line-up.

“The community curated their own show,” said Damon McLeese, executive director of Access Gallery. “We have everything from ink on paper to an oil painting, we have a piece that’s origami. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a wonderful exhibit.”

“All Access Pass” will be on view through February 23. The show will be part of the Art District on Santa Fe's First Friday Art Walk on February 7, from 6:00pm-9:00pm.

A special “Meet the Artists” event will also take place on Friday, February 21 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. At this event, artists share more about their work in a relaxed environment.

Additionally, Access Gallery is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 1:00pm-5:00pm and Saturdays from 1:00pm-4:00pm. The gallery is located at 909 Santa Fe Dr., Denver, CO 80204.

Disability Information & Access Line: Vaccine Resources and More

Did you know? You can call the Disability Information & Access Line (DIAL) for assistance with finding and scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment.

DIAL was launched in May 2021 using a grant from the Administration for Community Living with initial funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The access line connects callers with trained specialists who can help them find a COVID-19 vaccine site near them, set up an appointment, and connect to transportation options. Specialists can also direct callers to information that can answer questions about the vaccine.

Additionally, DIAL can identify services that can support callers with other resources, such as food, housing, and transportation.

DIAL specialists are available Monday through Friday from 8:00am-9:00pm Eastern Time. Specialists can assist callers who speak a variety of languages, including callers speaking American Sign Language.
