It All Started with a Pair of Kittens
Meet Super Volunteer Danielle Moncuso!

Originally from the Philadelphia area, Danielle Moncuso moved to Northern Virginia almost five years ago and, shortly thereafter, adopted a pair of SPCA kittens: litter mates Amber and Ruby, now five years old. The adoption process was Danielle's first experience with the SPCA of Northern Virginia - but it wouldn't be her last!

One year later, Danielle took the plunge and became a volunteer for SPCA NOVA, fostering kittens. Initially, it was difficult to give up her foster kittens to their adoptive families, especially after establishing a bond with her charges, but Danielle focused on the "why" of fostering. She contends that best part of volunteering for SPCA NOVA is knowing that she has helped so many cats find their forever homes.

However, adopting two cats and serving as a foster parent for the SPCA still wasn't enough for Danielle...

DIY Volunteering: Clever Crafts to Help SPCA NOVA

Among the items on SPCA NOVA's wish list are toys for the cats and dogs awaiting their forever homes. With just a few easy-to-find materials and a creative mind, you can help SPCA NOVA by creating simple and fun toys to amuse the animals in foster homes.

SPCA Finds Homes for Lucky Yemeni Street Dogs

Over the past two years, a dozen lucky pooches have had a chance to start over, thanks to SPCA NOVA and some good Samaritans working for the State Department in the Middle Eastern country of Yemen. Several Yemeni street dogs found their way onto the grounds of the U.S. embassy compound, where they were taken under the wing of some compassionate staffers. A number of those dogs, along with their offspring who were born on the embassy grounds, made their way to the U.S. to search for forever homes.

We first profiled some of our Yemeni adoptees in our Winter 2012 newsletter, and today we're happy to report that nearly all of the former street dogs have been adopted into safe and loving homes in the U.S. These special pooches have impressed their humans with their intelligence, protectiveness, loyalty, willfulness and distinctive vocalization.

Tip of the Month: Caring for Your Pets While on Vacation

There are many excellent options for caring for your four-legged companions when you leave town for a well-earned vacation. The key things to consider are your pet's temperament, comfort with being away from home and any special needs your pet may have.

Adoption Spotlight

My name is MAX. Are you a "Mutt Nut"? If so, come to meet me. Just about every canine breed is somewhere in my background. I wound up at a shelter because my owners kept putting me in a backyard where the fence was broken. Guess they weren't very observant. The last time it happened they left me there. Please give me a secure forever home.

BISCUIT (#2) is a friendly, curious, high energy kitty. He loves interacting with people and being in the middle of where the action is. Biscuit can get a little playfully aggressive if his energy isn't redirected appropriately, so he needs a home without small children. Because Biscuit is FIV-positive and we don't know if he likes other cats, he needs to be the only kitty in the household. We do think he needs four-legged companionship and are hoping to find him a home with a cat-friendly dog. Biscuit is a truly wonderful kitty who is expected to live a long life as a healthy FIV-positive kitty.
