During a recent Bible study, we talked about how important it is not only to know who Jesus is according to Scripture, but also to understand what He has done personally for us. We looked at the story of Lazarus in John 11 as a powerful picture of both the humanity and deity of Jesus.
One of our students shared a great insight from this passage. After Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, the first thing He says is:
“Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” (John 11:44)
Lazarus had been dead for four days. The grave clothes he wore were wrapped around a body that had already begun to decay. Naturally, those clothes didn’t belong on someone who had been brought back to life.
And that’s exactly the point!
In the same way, Jesus calls us to take off our “grave clothes.” Because of His death and resurrection—which we celebrate this Sunday—we are no longer defined by our sin. The old life we once lived no longer belongs to us. Jesus has rescued us from death and made us alive in Him.
Romans 6:5–7 reminds us:
“For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we will certainly also be united with Him in a resurrection like His… we should no longer be slaves to sin… because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.”
What an incredible truth. Jesus doesn’t just raise us to life—He calls us to live like we are alive.
It is such a blessing to sit with these students, Bibles open, seeking to know Jesus more. I pray you are encouraged by the work He is doing on this campus—and that you remember: those grave clothes don’t belong on you anymore. Jesus has made you alive.
