Vanguard Crew Makes the Holidays Brighter at HopePHL | | |
The holiday season at HopePHL is always a bustling and joyful time, filled with anticipation and excitement as we prepare to spread cheer throughout our community. We are incredibly grateful for the dedicated Vanguard volunteers who generously give their time each year to help us bring the spirit of the holidays to life.
Fondly known at HopePHL as "elves" these wonderful individuals join us annually to open, sort, and thoughtfully arrange an array of holiday donations. Their tireless efforts transform our space into a festive holiday store, allowing families to browse and select gifts for their loved ones in a warm, welcoming environment.
We are continually amazed by the willingness, efficiency, and joyful energy that these volunteers bring to HopePHL every December. Their commitment to our mission and the seamless way they work together makes this annual tradition something we look forward to each year. The impact of their kindness helps to create cherished memories and ensure that the holidays feel magical and special for all the families we serve.
This holiday season Vanguard contributed over $10,000 in donations for our holiday store. We are so grateful for the partnership we have. Thank you, Vanguard!
| | Bringing the Community Together to Celebrate Kwanzaa | | |
The 11th Annual NAC Fire & Ice Kwanzaa Celebration lit up a brisk Friday evening in December, bringing together community members for a night of connection. Thank you to the Community Education Center (CEC) for hosting us in their space!
Despite the cold, a lively crowd gathered to enjoy live music from Beyond The Bars, Kenny Sykes, and Ms. Fran the Caroler, live ice sculpture carving by Ice Sculpture Philly in the Belmont neighborhood, and a planting activity with John McCoy from Manyard Plants to help everyone breathe easier during the busy holiday season.
Guests were also able to explore the various community resources available such as health screenings by Penn Medicine, housing resources and support for first-time homebuyers from Achieveability, and a presentation on Tangled Titles and utility assistance from Community Legal Services, who were on hand to assist individuals as well.
As the night went on, laughter, conversation, and music filled the air as guests gathered around the bonfire symbolizing the principles represented by the seven candles of Kinara and were invited to toss notes into the flames representing catharsis of the past or inspiration of the future.
Attendees were also treated to an array of generous giveaways, including warm gloves and socks, sweet treats, orchids, rosemary "trees", poinsettias, boxes of fresh produce, and a delicious free meal from Lil Trent’s food truck. The event created a welcoming space where neighbors could connect, relax, and celebrate together.
A special thank you to our volunteers from Vanguard, the University of Pennsylvania Radiation Oncology Department and the Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, Gary Kao, and HopePHL Board Chair Jessie Heckman. We thank you for your time, support, and dedication!
Kwanzaa is a meaningful time for African Americans and people of African descent to honor their heritage, strengthen community bonds, and celebrate culture through the Nguzo Saba, or Seven Principles. We were honored to celebrate alongside our community and invite you to learn more about the Seven Principles by checking out our Kwanzaa graphics here!
| | Holiday Magic Comes Alive at Winter Wonderland | | |
Our annual Winter Wonderland celebration for our residents was a great success this year with around 40 parents and children gathering to enjoy a night filled with festive fun, delicious treats, and holiday spirit!
Throughout the evening, families relaxed and connecting while enjoying buttery popcorn, steaming hot cocoa, fluffy cotton candy, savory hot dogs, and gooey s’mores. Families enjoyed a variety of activity stations, including writing heartfelt letters to Santa, and creating colorful holiday decorations to take home. A highlight of the evening was the chance to snap photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who made a special visit to help spread holiday cheer!
The celebration was made even more special by a thoughtful visit from Gary Kao and the Radiation Oncology Department from Penn, as they stopped by to deliver generous donations for our holiday drive. Their kindness and generosity helped make the season brighter for our residents. HopePHL also thanks the Vanguard Crew and UnitedHealthcare volunteers for their help with Winter Wonderland.
Winter Wonderland is one of the most anticipated events of the year for our residents. It allows us to create a welcoming space where families can come together, celebrate the season, and experience the warmth, joy, and togetherness that define this special time of year.
| | Ending HopePHL's Jazz Season on a High Note | | |
Our extended Jazz Festival season came to a close in December with two final Pop-Up events that brought the energy and spirit of jazz to life once more.
These evenings featured performances by the Drexel University Jazz Orchestra and the Beyond the Bars Winter Showcase, filling the space with powerful rhythms and vibrant collaboration.
We are deeply grateful for the continued support from our community, which allowed us to spotlight and uplift youth jazz performers through four Pop-Up events held after our festival last summer. With over 275 attendees across these events, your participation and encouragement play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of jazz artists.
We are thrilled to look ahead and celebrate a major milestone— the 20th Anniversary of the Lancaster Jazz & Arts Festival in July 2026. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
Stay up to date on future pop-ups and festival information here.
