a brother forever

Can I tell you about my dear friend George Hartner?

About 20 years ago, George and his wife Jane expressed interest in establishing Outdoor Illumination of Carolina. I had no idea that our (highly successful) business venture would become SO much more than business.

George and I became very close – we could talk about anything – anything – for hours on end. Everything from his beloved NY Mets to his passion for music. We’d often speculate whether a Beatles song was actually “Lennon or McCartney”. While he was not formally religious, he possessed a deep spirituality – and we could hash out the meaning of life at any moment. Not sure we ever figured it out, but you know what they say about “the journey”…

George was supremely talented. He could “hang ten” with surfers half his age. I saw his talent firsthand on the guitar but I know he could pick up any musical instrument and shred it. He could ski any terrain and he made it look easy – and fun! Our little outdoor lighting peer group consisted of Jerry McKay from Omaha, Mike Rollins from Charleston plus George and me. We shared best practices and while Jerry, Mike and I all enjoy golf essentially the only time George would play would be with us. And of course, he was always the best player among us.

George was insanely creative. He wrote songs like most of us change our socks. The lyrics always had depth – and usually whimsey. Between his songwriting, instrumental talent, his contributions to the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and his simple passion for great music, he was wired into to some very notable rock musicians. And while he loved so much music, he was also keenly aware of what he didn’t love.

George loved life. And more than anything he loved his family. His lovely wife Jane, his amazing son Zeke and his dearly departed daughter Alex. He loved his extended family too – whether they were blood relatives or just brothers and sisters in humanity. And we loved him. We will always love George. My brother forever!
