News and Notes

Honor a Lifetime of Service of Our Retired Priests

This year’s retired priest collection takes place during the weekend of November 2nd and 3rd, 2024. Our priests enrich our lives in many ways: they baptize our children, comfort us in the confessional, witness our marriage vows and hold our loved ones hands as the Lord calls them home. Let’s join together to help provide care and housing for our retired priests so they can live their retirement in dignity. Archdiocese of Washington priests have selflessly served the faithful and the community to continue Christ’s mission for decades, and in some cases, more than a half century.

SEASON OF REMEMBRANCE

We remember our deceased loved ones in a special way throughout November. Each day a Mass is offered for this intention. Find envelopes in the pews on which to list the names of the deceased to be remembered at these Masses. You may drop your envelopes in the collection basket or at the rectory, and we will place them on the altar in the Wedding Chapel.

HAPPY NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK

NOV 3 - 9, 2024

National Vocation Awareness Week, celebrated November 3-9, 2024, is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations.

Please ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons, and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond generously to God's gift of vocation.

VETERANS DAY

Masses are celebrated at 7:30am12:10pm with no Confessions or Eucharistic Adoration on Monday, November 11. The rectory office is closed for the federal holiday.

ANNIVERSARY OF CATHEDRAL DEDICATON

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES TRAINING

Saturday | November 9 | 9-12pm

Join us! All are welcome! Our liturgical ministry training will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 9am to Noon.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, “Here am I; send me!” – Isaiah 6:8

We have the best volunteer ministers I have ever encountered in any parish of which I have had the privilege of ministering. It’s the aspect of life in our parish community that has most impressed me since my arrival in July. There’s just one problem: there’s not enough!

Have you ever thought to yourself that it would be nice to have another minister of hospitality to warmly welcome those who come through our doors or to distribute our newsletter as folks leave?

Have you ever been disappointed that the Precious Blood isn’t offered at a Mass you attend here?

Have you ever thought that a robust corps of servers adds reverence and dignity to our worship?

These and similar thoughts aren’t just your thoughts. They are echoes of the desire of God himself, the longings of his heart to minister to his beloved children through the hands and voices of their brothers and sisters. Your hands. Your voice.

The Lord is calling you to respond with the generous reply of the prophet Isaiah: here I am Lord! Use me to build up your family here at the mother Church of Washington!

This month, we are recruiting new ministers of hospitality, new extraordinary ministers of communion, new servers, and new lectors.

The challenge I and my fellow priests propose to you is to respond generously. We and your fellow parishioners need you. Even if you can or prefer to serve only once or twice a month: we would be so happy to have you.

Know you will be well-trained by our fantastic coordinators. Know you will be welcomed into a new community within our parish community: the community of ministers. Know that God is never outdone in being generous to those who are generous to him.

To respond and learn more, complete the interest form linked HERE. Or fill-out the interest form found in the pew and drop it in the collection basket.

Thank you for your generosity!                                                                     ~Fr. Joe

Health Fair Update!

The annual Health Fair, spearheaded by David Scalzitti, was held on September 29th and had more than 40 people take advantage. While we are pleased to help over 40 people, there is a consideration next year of shifting the 2025 Health Fair from morning to late morning-early afternoon, to build it around the Spanish-language mass whose attendees have historically taken most advantage of the services offered.
