A Celebration of Sac County’s Plan to Help Seniors and Disabled Persons

On Monday, March 17, 2025 MAS-SSF staff members Abid Stanekzai, Program Manager and Hamed Bahrami, Peer Support Specialist, participated in the formal launch and celebration of Sacramento County’s Local Aging Development Action Plan (LADAP). This collaborative, well-researched plan will be rolled out over the next five years. The focus is on fostering an inclusive, supportive, and accessible environment for aging populations and individuals with disabilities.

Our staff were there to represent our many programs including Al-Afia for Seniors. Representatives from SETA, Sutter Health, My Sister’s House (DV shelter) and others participated in the event held in the Union Ballroom on the California State University Sacramento campus.

At the family level, by implementing this plan, our County is not only showing that it cares about and wants to help seniors and disabled persons enjoy a better standard of living, it also recognizes that families and the larger community will benefit.

At the community level, this plan is designed to be systemic, transformational, feasible, and community-driven. It aligns with the following five key goals from the California Master Plan for Aging:

  • Housing for All Stages and Ages – Expanding affordable and accessible housing options.
  • Health Reimagined – Enhancing healthcare services for aging populations.
  • Inclusion and Equity, Not Isolation – Promoting community engagement and accessibility.
  • Caregiving That Works – Supporting caregivers with effective policies and resources.
  • Affording Aging – Ensuring financial security and resource access for older adults.

We’re thankful we live in an area that recognizes the growing need for age- and disability-friendly communities, driven by significant demographic shifts:

  • 441,000 Sacramento County residents (28% of the population) are either over the age of 60 or have a disability.
  • By 2030, the number of older adults and individuals with disabilities is projected to reach nearly 480,000.
  • This shift presents an opportunity to design age-friendly and accessible communities that promote economic growth while enhancing well-being and inclusivity for residents of all ages and abilities.
