A Champion for Latinx Entrepreneurs and Community Empowerment: Meet Carla Colin

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, GlobalMindED highlights Hispanic leaders, role models, and those who are committed to advancing Hispanic heritage, people, and culture.

Carla Colin is the President of the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Boulder County, Colorado, where she has been instrumental in driving the organization's growth and impact since assuming leadership. Under her guidance, the Chamber has expanded its membership, enhanced its support for small businesses, and increased its advocacy for Latinx entrepreneurs. Carla's background in social work and her deep commitment to community empowerment have fueled initiatives that promote economic development, cultural recognition, and the creation of generational wealth. Her leadership has not only strengthened the Chamber's presence in the business community but also amplified its role in fostering opportunities and support for the Latinx and BIPOC population in Colorado.

What's your personal story?

Carla Colin's personal journey is one of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to her community. Born in Mexico City, she immigrated to Colorado at the age of 15, facing the challenges of culture shock and language barriers head-on. These early struggles fueled her drive to succeed and to uplift others who face similar obstacles. Carla pursued a career in social work, where her passion for advocacy and community leadership flourished. Her experiences as an immigrant shaped her dedication to supporting the Latinx community, particularly in the realms of small business development, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment. Carla founded Mi Casa Azul LLC, a company dedicated to promoting Mexican and Colorado artists through a fair-trade system, while also educating the public about the rich traditions and craftsmanship behind their work. Through her work, Carla has become a powerful voice for recognizing and honoring the contributions of historically marginalized communities, using her own story as a source of inspiration for others.

What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?

Reflecting on my journey, several key moments stand out that have significantly shaped my path. The first was my family's decision to move to the United States when I was 15. The challenges of adapting to a new culture and learning a new language were overwhelming, but they also ignited a fire in me to prove that I could overcome any obstacle. Another pivotal moment was my decision to pursue social work. This allowed me to channel my passion for helping others into a career where I could make a tangible difference in people's lives. Founding Mi Casa Azul was also transformative, as it gave me a platform to support artists and preserve the rich cultural traditions I hold dear. Finally, becoming the President of the Latino Chamber of Commerce was a defining milestone, as it enabled me to advocate for the Latinx community on a broader scale, fostering economic growth and cultural recognition. Each of these moments, rooted in both struggle and triumph, has guided me toward my current role, where I strive to empower others and build a legacy of positive change.

Where does your passion to serve come from?

My passion for serving is deeply rooted in the example my parents set for me. Growing up, I witnessed them consistently helping others, even when we didn't have much ourselves. Their generosity and willingness to support those around us, regardless of our own circumstances, left a profound impact on me. It wasn't about recognition or reward; they helped others simply because it was the right thing to do. This authentic and genuine spirit of service became a core value for me, and it's what drives me to give back to my community today. Whether through social work, supporting small businesses, or advocating for cultural preservation, I carry forward the lessons of compassion and selflessness that I learned from my family.

How can GlobalMindED help you reach your goals?

Great question! I would say by collaborating and supporting the causes and communities I care for.
