Starting June 23, Melanie Carr Gallery will be showing "The Imagined & Invented Figure." The month long exhibition features the work of three New England based artists: Aris Moore, Jennifer Knaus and Jennifer McCandless. The artists have created exciting two and three dimensional work that is both fantastical and surrealist in subject. Aris Moore will be presenting drawings that examine the space between childhood and adulthood and put focus on the mouths of the figures, emphasizing the mouth's ability to convey expression. Jennifer Knaus's work consists of paintings and drawings that are both beautiful and absurd, depicting women dressed in plant life in the style of 17th century still lifes. Jennifer McCandless will be showing her ceramic sculptures, which are anatomically exaggerated according to the most significant aspects of the individual's behavior and physique. "The Imagined & Invented Figure" is intended to work in accordance with Melanie Carr Gallery's mission to promote contemporary art to a wide audience, and the variety of striking pieces in the exhibition will no doubt do just that. Newport Art Museum welcomes all tonight to "Art after Dark," beginning at 5:00 p. m. to celebrate the opening of four new summer exhibitions found through out the museum galleries. "Sea of Heartbreak" features the work of Joan Hill, who creates large installations out of marine debris in order to demonstrate the effects of ocean pollution. "A Girl and Her Room" showcases the work of Rania Matar, a photographer whose photographs depict American and Middle Eastern teenage girls in their bedrooms, showing the similarities between the girls despite their different backgrounds. "Paramnesiac" features painter Cristi Rinklin's flowing and luxurious work, which uses swelling shapes and clouds of fog and smoke to create a dreamlike reality. "Sun Salutations" is an exhibition of Shara Hughes's abstract landscape paintings, guest curated by Dodie Kazanjian in collaboration with ART&NEWPORT. Each of these exhibitions has something unique and beautiful to offer the viewers at Newport Art Museum. From now until September 23, visit "Art on the Trails 2018" at the Beals Preserve in Southborough, MA. Program Director Catherine M. Weber and the Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF) are pleased to present over eighteen unique outdoor art installations at the Beals Preserve which is managed by SOLF. The theme of the exhibition, juried by former director of the Boston Sculptors Gallery Jean Minero, is "Unexpected Gestures." The juried works featured in "Art on the Trails 2018" were created and selected with the setting of the preserve in mind, contrasting and blending into the surrounding woods, meadows, trails, and ponds. The exhibition is meant to surprise and delight Beals Preserve's visitors, offering a new way of looking at the environment around them. "Art on the Trails 2018" is sure to excite visitors and enhance the natural beauty of the Beals Preserve trails.
